IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1
The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1972 and 2000 by four different modes of transport. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

SAMPLE ANSWER
The line graph compares four different ways of product transportation in the UK from 1974 to 2002. The x-axis represents the years, while the y-axis represents the million of goods weighted in tons.
Overall, as shown in the figure, the most used method is by road throughout the entire selected periods, the other three modes showed fluctuating patterns.
Road transportation started strongly with 70 tons transported in 1974. Then, it continued to increase slightly, reaching nearly 80 tons in 1978, before it dropped to 65 tons in1982. This was the only decrease that faced the road transportation as it gradually continued to grow, reaching almost 100 tons in 2002. Rail comes second with 40 tons in the first year, but then it decreased to 30 tons in 1986. Then, it experienced an unstable trend before it increased to 40 in 2002.
Water presented a spiked trend after it was stable from 1974 to 1978. It jumped from 40 to nearly 60, which continued till 1994. After that, it went down to 45 tons in 1998, then again spiked to over 60 in 2002. Lastly, the pipeline that from the start presented a lower number compared to the other methods, with only 5 tons in 1974.
In contrast, the the first years it sharply increased , reaching over 20 in 1978, then presented no dramatic trends in the whole intervals , except, it dropped to 20 tons in 1994.
