SAMPLE ANSWER
The pie charts illustrate the age distribution of the populations in Yemen and Italy in 2000 and projected figures for 2050.
In 2000, Yemen had a youthful population, with over half (50.1%) aged 0–14 years, while only 3.6% were aged 60 or above. By 2050, the proportion of young people is expected to decline significantly to 37%, while the 60+ age group is predicted to increase to 5.7%. Meanwhile, the working-age group (15–59 years) will slightly rise from 46.3% to 57.3%.
In contrast, Italy in 2000 had a more mature population. The largest segment was the 15–59 age group (61.6%), followed by those aged 60+ (24.1%). Children aged 0–14 accounted for only 14.3%. By 2050, the elderly population is expected to grow substantially to 42.3%, while the 15–59 age group will shrink to 46.2%, and the youngest group will fall slightly to 11.5%.
Overall, Yemen’s population is projected to age moderately, while Italy’s will age dramatically.
