The diagram illustrates the distillation process for alcohol.

The liquid contains water and alcohol is kept in the distillation flask over a tripod under which a Bunsen burner is placed. The flask is closed with a stopper and a thermometer is passed from the hole in the stopper to keep a check on the temperature of the liquid inside the flask. The distillation flask’s extended tube is kept above a beaker and the supply of cool water is arranged around the condenser in the tube that leads to the beaker.

Once the Bunsen burner is lit, it starts heating the liquid, which is a mixture of alcohol and water in the distillation flask. After sometime, because of the heat, the alcohol from the liquid starts evaporating and converts into vapour. The vapour then passes through the tube which is covered by a condenser. Here, the cool water converts the vapourised alcohol into liquid form. Finally, the condensed and pure form of alcohol gets collected in the beaker at the end.
