SAMPLE ANSWER
The three pie charts show the differences in percentages of people who speak different native languages – English, French and other non-official languages – living in Canada in 1996, 2006 and 2016.
The most noticeable feature of the information is that English dominates in all three years, with over half of the Canadian population speaking it as a native language. The total share of English language dominance, however, declined slightly over the twenty years, from 60% in 1996 to 57% in 2016. The percentage of native French speakers has also declined over the same period, from nearly a quarter of the population (23%) in 1996 to just over a fifth (21%) in 2016.
In contrast, native speakers of non-official languages have seen an increase in coverage over the two decades. Starting at 17% in 1996, the figure increased by 5 percentage points, to 22%, in 2016. In other words, the number of native French speakers has been overtaken by the combination of speakers of non-official languages in Canada.
