Easiest way to describing a bar chart in IELTS Academic

In IELTS Academic, writing task 1 is a report to be written on Line graph, Pie chart, Diagram, Map or Bar graph. To complete this task 20 minutes are allowed and you have to write at least 150 words.  Among all these we will today discuss the bar chart Easiest way to describing a bar chart in IELTS Academic.

There are a couple of different structures that can be followed to describe a bar chart but we will take a look on the structure in which you assign each sentence of your text to a topic.

1. Choosing information from the bar graph

The length of an ideal sentence is of 10 to 15 words so we can assume that the description of the bar chart should be of 10 to 13 sentences. As by writing this much will hit the target of 150 words. It is necessary to avoid irrelevant information and only choose the useful information that too in a very concise way.  For this we should assign each sentence for a specific task:

– One sentence for introduction.

– Two sentences with the superlative.

– One sentence with a comparison. Make comparisons where relevant.

– One sentence grouping two data points because they are similar.­

– One sentence noting an exception. ­

– One sentence describing some data in advanced manner.

– One sentence describing the data in a normal fashion.

– Two sentences for summary.

Don’t try to write the sentences in the same order as given above as this may look awkward. You should write the in a way that makes your bar chart description flow naturally. Remember this just a rough guide for the initial stage you can do experiments with it when you get familiar with the method to write about bar chart.

Sometime you have to repeat the same sentences with different data as the graph may contain some extra information. It is recommended to get your content checked by some expert in order to know where you are lacking and can work on it accordingly.

2. A bar graph sample answer

Now when we know what and how to write the description of the bar graph. We should proceed to make comparisons where relevant by using our data selection skills. The bar chart contains too much of information and one can get lost in the provided information. It is important to be focused on what you are looking for when you are analyzing the chart.

3. Some more tips on describing a bar graph

– You should not include every single data point in the description.

– Avoid mixing formats, for example don’t mix decimals with estimations in the same sentence.

– After writing the description with all of the information you wanted to include, read it again to check the repetition of words and try to replace the similar words with synonyms or some other words this will help you in scoring some extra bands. For example, change “big” to “most significant”.

– Check the whole text and make sure it is free of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.

– Don’t stick on one type of bar chart try to practice with different bar charts this will help you to improve.

– Read and write different sample answers of bar chart. This will help you to understand what information you should select. 

Review the superlatives -these are essential if you want to effectively describe the chart.
