In the IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 is a report writing task and the minimum word limit is of 150 words that are to be written in recommended 20 minutes. This report is worth 1/3 of your overall score for IELTS Writing. You have to write a report on one of the following prompts:

– Charts (A bar chart, A pie chart, A table, Multiple graphs)

– Chart (Line graphs)

– A process

– A map

There is no doubt that Task 2 has more worth but it doesn’t mean that the Task 1 should be ignored. As said earlier Task 1 has 1/3 worth of overall scores which quite a big portion to be ignored. Top ten tips for the IELTS Writing Task 1

1. Where in the diagram you see that the data of a particular time is given on the range of things simply pick the maximum and the minimum values and compare them.

2. When you get the data across a spam of a period simply highlight changes and trends with the same feature. Where it is possible, pick the trends that you see in between different from others explain and compare them.

3. Understand for what X and Y axes stands for as this is important to write report in a proper format. See properly the units and time periods as this will help you in understanding the axes properly.   

4. It is highly recommended that you should not spend more than 20 minutes on Task 1 as this task is shorter than Task 2 and also have less weithage than Task 2. So 20 minutes is sufficient to complete this task.

6. Keep an eye on spelling and punctuation as they are very important if you want to get 7+ in IELTS writing.

7. Try to use short sentences and active voice as this will help to avoid grammar mistakes.

A common mistake that most of the students commit

A very common mistake that is committed by most of the students is that they don’t keep an eye on the watch. As said earlier you should be very careful about timings if you spend much time on Task 1 than you will not have enough time to write Task 2 as a result the task will remain incomplete. It is highly recommended to spend 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2 during this time you should read, plan, write and cross check your task. So, it’s very important to stick to the time limits.
