IELTS listening test: Tips to build your vocabulary
In IELTS vocabulary plays a vital role in every module so it is necessary to learn vocabulary. In listening test also vocabulary have key role in enhancing the scores. To get good score in listening you should know how the word is pronounced and spelled as if you wrote any spelling wrong your scores will be deducted. Moreover, you should also know how any word is pronounced so for all these things you need to improve your vocabulary.
There is certain range of vocabulary frequently used in each part of the listening test. We will look at the most commonly used words in all first part of the IELTS Listening test along with tips and advice on how to spell English words correctly.
Familiar vocabulary
In part 1 of the listening test commonly you hear conversation between two people relating to the daily life. So the words which are used are mainly from our daily routine like life, dates, times, places, activities, work and leisure.
Even though these words are used commonly, they are often spelled incorrectly so valuable marks are lost in the easiest part of the Listening test.
1. Days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Quick Tip: Wednesday and Saturday is commonly misspelled.
2. Months and seasons of the year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December, winter, spring, autumn, summer
Quick Tip: The first ‘r’ in February is often forgotten. The final ‘n’ in autumn is often forgotten as it is silent ‘n’.
3. Shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, cylinder, oval
4. Transportation: automobile, truck, tractor, tram, subway, airplane, train, bicycle, car, pedestrian, passenger, commuter.
Quick Tip: ‘commuter’ is often misspelled, confusing it with ‘computer’!
5. Colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, black, brown
Quick Tip: Colour spelled with a ‘u’ is the Canadian/British spelling. In the US, it is spelled ‘color’ without a ‘u’ both are correct.
6. Verbs: suggest, develop, borrow, persuade, discuss, review, concentrate, believe, crash
7. Adjectives: beautiful, necessary, fantastic, comfortable, convenient, wonderful, terrible, temporary, permanent, knowledgeable, exciting, boring, difficult, easy
8. Numbers, times, and currencies: All these are commonly used in part 1 of listening so it is necessary to know about it. Non native often get confused with “O” as it is used for zero.
Quick Tip: Be sure that the symbol $ is for dollars and £ for ponds if you shuffle them your score will be deducted. Always be aware of A.M and P.M. while writing time.
