How to Solve Flowchart Type Questions In The Listening section
In IELTS exam Listening is the first module which you come across and it’s same for both academic and general so the question paper and the audio which is played are same for both. The checking and scoring criteria is also the same.
In listening the main question types are maps, diagrams, MCQ, fill in the blanks and flow charts. In this article we will discuss how to solve the flowchart as it is considered to be difficult question type.
What is Flowchart
It is a form of diagram and it mostly comes in the second part of the exam. A flowchart is a sort of step by step instruction diagram in which you have to fill the missing information while listening to the audio. The sentences are short and the arrows are given to show the directions that to which way one should move. Here is an example of a flowchart.
Now let’s look at some tips to solve flowchart completion questions.
Numbering the Flowcharts
In IELTS listening you can see some flowcharts which are simple and flows straight but others are complicated as they can give you the different directions either from left to right then from right to upwards this can make you confused. So it is better to follow the question numbers instead of arrows and directions as in the audio you will get the answers in the same sequence as in the questions.
Audio Information Always Flows in Sequence
Always keep in mind that like in other question types in listening here also the information in the audio will be in sequence as per the questions. As the flowchart is in short steps and every step will cover a new point or topic so you should focus on the relevant information and avoid the unnecessary information. Just follow the order and you will find the answer for every question.
Underline Keywords in the Sentences
In IELTS underlining the keywords is the key to crack the exam. This is also implemented on flowcharts in the given 30 seconds you should underline the keywords by which you will feel ease to locate the answers.
Keep in Mind Word Instruction
Instructions play an important role in reducing your scores as if you will not follow them your scores will be deducted for example if the instructions are NOT MORE THAN TWO WORDS and you write three words then your answer will be marked incorrect. So it is very important to read and follow the instructions. Sometimes you feel that the answer is of three words then you should adjust the answer accordingly but remember it should be grammatically right.
