HOW TO AVOID REPETITION OF WORDS IN IELTS WRITING
In IELTS, Lexical Resources (Vocabulary words) are accountable for 25% of our Band Scores. As it is one of the most prominent aspects of IELTS especially in writing as well as speaking modules.
Some candidates think writing a lengthy essay will automatically enhance their score and they try to exceed the word limit to 300 or more. This thinking is wrong as in the given time only an expert aspirant can write that much words but the intermediate test taker will get short of matter and will write irrelevant matter and in this the chances of committing grammatical errors will raise. In all this the main problem that occurs is repetition of words as to write more words one will repeat the same words again and again. Now the question is how to resolve this problem as it is very difficult to learn abundant of vocabulary or synonyms in a short period. Here we will discuss how we can avoid the repetition by following some steps:-
1. Learn synonymous of common keywords – we can make this phenomenon easier by learning replaceable words of most repeated keywords such as people, increase, decrease, children, activity, happy, sad and so on. There are a plenty of words which are repeated on daily basis. That’s why, if learners acquire proper knowledge of these, they can substitute the words without confronting any hindrance and hesitation. Moreover, learning is not enough, practice on daily basis and make familiar as much as u can.
2. Change the sentence – it is very clumsy to see the starting of the sentences from ‘He’ or ‘It’ or ‘They’.
Therefore, change the statement from active to passive. It will not only help to shun the repetition but also make impressive because, its part of Coherence.
3. Add collocations – sometimes, you have not any specific words for the particular thing. For instance – people think that…..
We can substitute with ‘ both young and elderly people’.
It is good way to use various words along with for differentiation.
4. Try to use phrases – phrases help to make speaking plus writing more impressive. By using numerous phrases, we can extend our answers along with leave an impressive impression on examiner. To illustrate–
Fit – fit as a fiddle / fit as a flea
Sad – down in the dumps
Crowd – hustle and bustle……
However, please keep in mind that there are different phrases for writing and speaking. In speaking, we use informal phrases; whereas, in writing we use formal phrases.
