IELTS Writing Task 2

There is an ongoing debate about whether compulsory physical education (PE) in schools is the most effective way to improve children’s health and well-being. While some argue that it brings little benefit, I strongly believe that mandatory PE can play a crucial role in promoting both physical fitness and mental balance among students.

To begin with, making PE compulsory ensures that all students engage in regular exercise, regardless of their personal interest or lifestyle. In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, many children lead sedentary lives, spending excessive time on screens. Physical education helps them develop healthy habits, such as regular movement, teamwork, and discipline, which contribute to a more active lifestyle and better long-term health.

Moreover, PE classes do not just improve physical fitness but also support emotional well-being. Sports and group activities teach students cooperation, resilience, and stress management. These skills are particularly important for schoolchildren who face increasing academic pressure. A short session of physical activity can refresh their minds and enhance concentration in academic lessons.

Admittedly, PE alone cannot solve all health issues; factors like diet and lifestyle outside school are equally significant. However, making physical education compulsory can build a foundation for lifelong fitness and awareness.

In conclusion, while physical education may not be the only solution, it remains a highly effective and practical approach to improving the overall health and well-being of schoolchildren.
