IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Human civilisation has achieved remarkable technological progress over the past 100 years. Some people think this has also had negative effects on our lives.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Technological progress over the last century has transformed human life in remarkable ways. While many appreciate the conveniences and breakthroughs that have resulted, others believe that these advancements have also had harmful effects on our lives. I mostly agree with this viewpoint because technology, despite its benefits, has introduced significant social and environmental problems.
On the positive side, technology has revolutionised healthcare, communication, and education. Innovations like advanced medical equipment, online learning platforms, and instant messaging have made life more efficient and connected. These developments have improved life expectancy, made information more accessible, and reduced global distances.
However, the negative consequences are equally apparent. Overdependence on technology has led to a sedentary lifestyle and health issues such as obesity and poor eyesight. Social interactions have shifted online, weakening real-life relationships. Furthermore, rapid industrialisation and electronic waste have harmed the environment, contributing to pollution and climate change. Artificial intelligence and automation have also begun replacing human jobs, increasing unemployment in some sectors.
In conclusion, while the last hundred years of technological progress have undoubtedly brought many advantages, I believe the disadvantages cannot be ignored. A balanced approach is necessary—one that embraces innovation but also addresses the social and environmental costs that come with it.
