Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes, entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
The extent to which children should be given freedom to make their own choices has sparked considerable debate. Some argue that excessive autonomy may lead to self-centered behaviour, while others believe decision-making is a crucial part of child development. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my view.
On one hand, giving children too much control over everyday choices may foster selfishness. When children are constantly allowed to choose what to eat, wear, or watch, they may develop a mindset where personal preferences override social norms or family needs. Over time, this could result in individuals who are unwilling to compromise or consider others, potentially leading to a society that lacks cooperation and empathy.
On the other hand, making decisions is an essential life skill. Allowing children to make age-appropriate choices helps build independence, responsibility, and confidence. For example, choosing their clothes or managing pocket money encourages critical thinking and consequence evaluation. Moreover, when children are involved in decisions that affect them, they feel respected and valued, which can enhance emotional well-being and reduce behavioural issues.
In my opinion, a balanced approach is best. Children should be given freedom within boundaries. While they must be allowed to make certain decisions to foster growth, parents and educators should provide guidance to ensure these choices are reasonable and socially appropriate.
In conclusion, while concerns about nurturing selfish behaviour are valid, empowering children to make decisions, under supervision, is key to raising thoughtful and capable adults.
