IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You recently saw an advertisement in the newspaper asking for nominations for your favourite local business, such as a shop, restaurant, or café. Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper.

In the letter,

• describe the business and give its location

• say why you visit the business

• explain why you think it should be nominated

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Sir or Madam,

You recently called for nominations for the Local Business of the Year in Springfield. I am writing to nominate my favourite business,

Tame Hair. Tame Hair is a hairdressing salon located in Smith Street, Springfield, quite close to our home. The salon is owned and operated by Melissa Johnson.

My wife was the first person in our family to visit Melissa’s salon. She was so impressed that she decided to bring the rest of the family the next time. Now my wife, my two young daughters, and I all have our hair cut at Tame Hair.

We are all very happy with the way that Melissa cuts our hair, and we also think that her prices are very reasonable. Another thing that we like about the salon is that there is a small playroom with toys for children to play with, so the whole family can visit the salon easily and enjoyably.

For these reasons, I would like to nominate Tame Hair as the Local Springfield Business of the Year.
