Capital Letter and Symbols in IELTS Listening
PRECAUTIONS FOR LISTENING
If you are going to appear for IELTS Test, you would be aware of the Grammar, Vocabulary, and other things that play an important role in acquiring a high score. But, the significant use of capital letters is something that many candidates engrossed in IELTS Test preparation overlook most of the time. Some candidates who know the importance of using capital letters are bewildered with its correct usage.
In IELTS Listening module you need to read the instructions and question’s demand carefully.
Here are some precautions to fellow in IELTS listening to get better scores.
1. Write your answers in upper case:
When writing your answers on answer sheet be attentive and careful. Always write your answers in upper case i.e. in CAPITAL LETTERS. In the IELTS listening test, you can write your answers in lower case or upper case or a combination of both. In other words, you are not marked on your use of capitalization so you can choose whichever works best for you. Some students prefer to ‘print’ their answers in capital letters, and this is a good idea if your handwriting is not very easy to read.
Writing in capital letters usually requires more time, but in the listening test this is not really a problem as you have an additional 10 minutes at the end of the final recording to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. So, avoid writing your answers in lower case. Moreover, when you write your answers in capital letters then they are easily visual as well as need handwriting comes out.
2. Use of symbols:
In IELTS listening, some of answers are likely to be written with symbols such as “$”, “£”. These are the symbols which are used when you have to write about any amount of money.
Example: “$10” is your answer. Then according to the instructions of question you have to write the answer.
* If “$” symbol is already written in the question itself then there is no need to write the symbol.
* Always put “$” symbol before the figure, this is the right way to write your answer.
* If you want to write the “$” in words i.e. “DOLLARS” then it will come after the figure.

10$ – incorrect way
2. Example: 10 DOLLARS – correct way
DOLLARS 10 – incorrect way
NOTE: Figure is any number i.e. 10 in example.
3. Correct way to write timing & date:
There are many questions in IELTS listening, when you have to write the date and timing. Usually, we write timing as: 9:30AM but in IELTS we write it as 9.30AM. This is the correct way.
Furthermore, date format can be written as September 10 as well as 10 September. Both are the correct way to write your answers.
KEEP IN MIND:
These are some points that test taker should keep in mind.
* Carefully read the instructions. Don’t exceed or go beyond the instructions. If question requirement is “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS” then just write one word or two word answer. If you will write one extra word then it would be incorrect. So, don’t exceed the limit.
* Always write your answers in the given space. Adjust your handwriting according to it. Don’t write your answers out of the box and space given for the individual answer.
* Try to write your answers in the middle of the lines i.e. upper and below line of your answers sheet. Don’t touch the both lines while writing your answer.
* Check your spellings again and again while transferring your answers.
