The Writing Task 1 in IELTS GENERAL analyzes your ability to communicate about common practical issues of everyday life. For this task you have a total of 20 minutes to respond to a question prompt, by writing a letter to a person, company or institution. Your writing task is worth about 30% of your writing score and is scored separately than the Task 2 essay.

Types :

FORMAL : This includes letters written to someone you have not met, whose name you don’t know like official managers, your bosses, officers, editors of newspapers and so on .
SEMI-FORMAL: This can include letters about Complaining to a landlord ,Explaining to a neighbor , Asking a professor for permission etc.
INFORMAL:This type consists of letters regarding Inviting someone you know well,
Thanking a friend , Apologizing ,Asking for advice to a friend and others.

TIPS FOR FORMAL LETTERS
Let’s figure out what tips and strategies can you use in order to develop a good and impressive formal letter for securing your desired band score:
1) Identify the purpose of the letter – Your first step should should be two identify the purpose of your letter. Formal letters are of many different types including requesting information from a company, applying for a job ,complaining to a bank, store, airline or product service ,making a recommendation/suggestion and so on. Only after you exactly know what is the demand of the question ,you can reach task achievement.
2) Open and close the letter correctly – Opening and closing statements in your letter are very crucial for making a good impression on the examiner. Always choose appropriate phrases for this purpose. Some examples are provided below

3) Learn and use standard written phrases- In English letter writing, we use a number of standard expressions and phrases. These would not only help to save time and effort, but also make it a cup of tea for the reader to comprehend your meaning. You can add on the specific information you wish to communicate to these standard phrases. For instance,you can use these for letters of requesting information:
