Tips to ace IELTS Speaking Part 3

IELTS Speaking is divided in 3 parts

1. Introductory

2. Cue card

3. Follow ups

Most of the students get stuck in second and third section especially in the follow ups because in this section one has to give answers to the questions related to the cue card. It is very tiring to justify what you have said in the part two and answering 4-5 different questions can make you uncomfortable. So today in this article we will discuss some tips to ace IELTS Speaking Part 3.

1. Don’t try to wind things quickly

Speaking test lasts for 15 minutes and this period can be very hectic for you as it is quite hard to speak in a foreign language for such a long time. Moreover, the tension of the exam also makes you restless and exhausted and you may feel drowsy too.

Most of the students suffer with this problem and they try to wind the exam quickly. To achieve the goal they give short answers without much elaboration. This is a dangerous thing as by doing this they lose their scores. In part three it is expected by the examiner that you should give long answers and if it goes vice versa than your scores will definitely be deducted.

2. Checking your limits

Part 3 of IELTS Speaking is the part where examiner can really check your language skills in terms of grammatical structures and vocabulary. The examiner will not be able to judge the same in first two parts because in part 1 you will answer some basic questions and in the second part the examiner will not get the chance to cross question you so in the third part only the examiner can check your language skills to limits. So you should use variety of grammar structures, vocabulary and ideas in this part to impress the examiner and get good scores.

3. Answer the questions confidently

You should answer the questions confidently and should not be scared of anything while speaking. If you don’t understand any word of the question you can ask the examiner to explain the word but it should be in a polite way. Keep in mind that you cannot ask the examiner to explain the whole sentence and you cannot ask him to for the explanation very frequently.

4. Don’t be quite

In the IELTS Speaking test you can sometime face some questions about which you don’t have any idea. If you get this type of question you should not keep your mouth shut instead speak whatever you know the topic at least make an attempt. You should keep in mind that if you don’t answer even a single question than you score will reduce and you cannot afford this.

You can take some time to think upon the given topic and for avoiding thinking pause you can use ”That a difficult question, just give me a second to think about that.” or ”I’ve never thought about that, to be honest, give me a moment” as a filler. However, you should repeat this for every question you can do this only once in your whole exam.

5. Think about what structure the examiner is testing.

The examiner is always interested to know your capability of using a wide range of grammar structures and vocabulary. This does not mean that you try to insert unnecessary words or structures as this will impact your scores negatively. The examiner will ask you specific questions to test specific grammar structures and you should revert it accordingly.

Thank You 🙂
