
Time Management tips for IELTS Writing Task 1
In Writing module of IELTS there are two tasks for both Academic and General and you will get 60 minutes to complete both the tasks. The minimum word limit for Task 1 (Letter for General IELTS and a Report for Academic IELTS) is 150 words and for Task 2 (Essay for both) its 250 words. This means that you have to write approx.
400 words in 60 minutes. It’s not only about writing words in these minutes there are several other things that you have to do like thinking/ mind mapping about the topic, organizing it etc. All these things make the task more complicated and due to this many of the candidates have a fear in their mind and they Time Management tips for IELTS Writing Task 1.
Let’s start with Task 1: You should spend 20 minutes on Task 1 if you go above this than you will get short time for Task 2.
General Task 1
- In the first 2 minutes read the given statement very carefully and think what you can write about the topic. You should think –
- Whom you are writing to as this will help you to know in which tone you should write – formal or informal.
- What is the subject of writing and its bullet points and make sure that all the bullet points are covered.
- Which language you should use.
- 5 minutes for planning.
- It is very important to make a plan for your task as if you will have a clear idea that what you are going to write you will not stuck within the task to think for the next point.
- Use bullet points to think about the ideas and vocabulary. Don’t forget to use synonyms as repeating the same words can reduce your score
- In the notes don’t write the whole sentences just note the main points and essential phrases/expressions.
3. Write nonstop for next 10 minutes.
- After all these exercises start writing. Make sure you write 150 words in 10 minutes without stopping or taking pause. If anyhow you get stuck look back at your idea to refresh the things.
- If you forget any word don’t panic use some other word in its place or just go with some other way to express your idea.
- Write neatly so that the examiner can understand your each word easily without any effort.
- You should be clear about that in how many space you can write the 150 words as if you start counting every single word than you will lose your valuable time.
- In the last 3 minutes you should do proof reading.
- Check for the grammar errors and spelling mistakes and correct them.
- If you find any major mistake for which you have to make big changes don’t do it and try to fix with minor changes
Academic Task 1
1. Carefully look and analyze the given data.
- Think about the main trends and tendencies.
- In this task a comparison is required so you should concentrate on it as without it you can lose scores.
- Do not go in the depth just take the overview of the diagram.
- Pay attention to the way the data is presented – numbers, percentages, directions, etc.
2. Follow the next stages 2, 3, and 4 as given in General Task 1 above.
