Exam Pattern as well as Test Format of IELTS 2021

Academic Writing

The time period of IELTS writing is of 1 hour. There will be two tasks. Writing task 1 should be written in 150-180 words and Candidates must complete Task 2 in writing 250-280 words. Both answers should be formal in nature.

Task 1: the description of some visual information (graph/table/chart/diagram) in your own words will be asked to you to write. You may be requested to describe and explain data, steps of a process, how something works, or an object or event.  About 20 minutes will be given to you to write a task 1 of at least 150 words.

Task 2:  Individuals will be asked to give a point of view, argument, merits and demerits or a problem to consider. 40 minutes will be given to you to complete the essay of 250 words.

Writing of General training

The time period given to the writing general training is as same as academic that is 1 hour. It contains two writing tasks of 150 and 250 words, just like in IELTS Academic.

Task 1:  By writing a letter candidates are required to respond to a situation or scenario, for example, requesting information or explaining a situation.

Task 2: Candidates are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

1. Errors of subject verb argument

The most important factor of writing task 2 is subject verb argument as the subject and verb of the sentence must always accord in number with each other. Thence, if a person write a subject that is singular then its verb should also be singular, and if a subject is a plural, its verb should also be plural.

For instance:

Incorrect: A girl is sitting on the table.

Correct: Two girls are sitting on the table.

2. Fragments of sentences

Sentence fragments are considered as incomplete sentences because it’s missing a sentence that have become detached from the major clause, a critical component like subject or verb.

For Instance:

Incorrect: After they done writing a book

Correct: After they done writing a book, they watched movies.

3. Avoid Comma after introductory words and phrases

Usage of comma after an introductory word or phrase always gives the examiner a gradual pause after using the introductory elements and emphasizes essential information.

To examplify it:

Incorrect: I was feeling lonely so I listened to music.

Correct: I was feeling lonely, so I listened to music.

4. Misuse of apostrophes

By shortening and combining two words, it made a contraction word. For Instance, didn’t– didn’t. When you put an apostrophe with didn’t, it means ‘did not, otherwise it means ‘due to’

For instance:

Incorrect: It didn’t effect me.

Correct: It didn’t affect me.

5. Wrong word Usage

Various words and phrases are confused and misused in sentences. Using incorrect words in a sentence can change the whole meaning of the sentence. Ergo, always make sure to double-check the spellings of the words.

To examplify it:

Incorrect: I accepted the business proposal.

Correct: I accepted the business proposal.

Thank You 🙂
