Academic Writing Task 1:-
The chart below shows the changes in car ownership in Great Britain between 1961 and 2001. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer:-
The line graph shows the variation in the percentage of households that owned no car, one car, and two or more cars in Britain during a 40-year period from 1961 to 2001.
As can be seen from the chart, the car was a much less popular household item in the 1960s than it is today. Nearly 65% of British families did not have a car of their own in 1961, about one third had only one car, and no families owned two or more cars.
The next 20 years, however, saw a significant increase in car ownership. In 1981, 15% of British families owned two or more cars, while the percentage of families with one car reached a peak of 50%. During the same period, the percentage of households with no car decreased sharply to approximately 35%.
From 1981 to 2001, an increasing number of families purchased an additional car, pushing the percentage of households with two or more cars to a record high of nearly 30%. Families with only one car were still the majority, but their percentage had dropped slightly to about 43% by 2001. The percentage of families without a car, not surprisingly, kept decreasing to less than 30% at the end of the 40-year period.
General Writing Task 1:-
Your car is hired from a company and while you are driving on holiday, you have a small accident. You will have to write a report to the company to explain it.
In your letter:
- when and where you hired it
- describe how the accident happened
- what kind of action did you take after the accident
Sample Answer:-
Dear Sir,
I am a recent customer of your rental company having I rented a car from your downtown outlet in Detroit. The car hired was an economy model vehicle which I rented from March 21st to the present. I would like to commend your company on their professionalism and the service offered, and as such I am sure you will handle my incident with these qualities.
Unfortunately, I had an unavoidable accident involving the aforementioned vehicle and another party. The accident was caused by the other car failing to stop at the red light of the intersection I was passing through, and as such the second party collided into the driver’s side of my automobile. The police were informed in situ, whereupon they recorded information regarding the accident and the other driver’s insurance details.
The police established the other driver’s responsibility for the accident, and the second party’s insurance company has been informed. I would like to request that a replacement vehicle be offered while my current vehicle is incapacitated. Once again, I would like to commend your company’s professional attitude.
Yours sincerely

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-
We cannot help everyone in the world that needs help, so we should only be concerned with our own communities and countries. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Sample Answer:-
Some people believe that we should not help people in other countries as long as there are problems in our own society. I disagree with this view because I believe that we should try to help as many people as possible.
On the one hand, I accept that it is important to help our neighbors and fellow citizens. In most communities there are people who are impoverished or disadvantaged in some way. It is possible to find homeless people, for example, in even the wealthiest of cities, and for those who are concerned about this problem, there are usually opportunities to volunteer time or give money to support these people. In the UK, people can help in a variety of ways, from donating clothing to serving free food in a soup kitchen. As the problems are on our doorstep, and there are obvious ways to help, I can understand why some people feel that we should prioritize local charity.
At the same time, I believe that we have an obligation to help those who live beyond our national borders. In some countries the problems that people face are much more serious than those in our own communities, and it is often even easier to help. For example, when children are dying from curable diseases in African countries, governments and individuals in richer countries can save lives simply by paying for vaccines that already exist. A small donation to an international charity might have a much greater impact than helping in our local area.
In conclusion, it is true that we cannot help everyone, but in my opinion national boundaries should not stop us from helping those who are in need.

PART – 2 Cue Card
Describe a happy childhood event.
You should say:
- When it happened
- Who was involved
- How you felt at the time
Sample Answer:-
I’m going to talk about a happy childhood event that I remember, and that event was my 13th birthday.
It was 10 years ago now because I’m 23. My birthday is on the 7th May. What happened was my parents surprised me on my birthday by telling me that they were going to take me to a theme part that is a few hours from our house. I’d never been before – it had only been open a few months and they knew that I really wanted to go. As I recall it was a Saturday that we went. They didn’t tell me until the morning when I woke up that day.
My whole family was involved in the event. I have a brother and a sister so of course they came as well as my Mum and Dad, and not only that, we also picked up my grandparents on the way so they could join us. They were too old to go on the rides but it was still a great trip out for them!
The theme park was really amazing. There was a huge roller coaster which I remember was really scary but still excellent fun. One particular thing I remember is the ghost train. My younger sister was not allowed to go on the ride because she was too young and she was really upset and jealous of me and by brother! I think it was lucky she didn’t though. It was really realistic – there were real people in there who were actually dressed up as ghosts and they jumped out just when you weren’t expecting it – it made us jump so many times!
How I felt really depended on what I was doing. Obviously I was excited the whole day, but I remember that I felt really exhilarated when I was on the rides such as the roller coaster, and scared but still excited on the ghost train.
The reason that I remember it so well is that I had been so desperate to go to the theme park and I’d been talking to my friends at school for ages about how I wanted to go. So it was so great when I found out that I could. Also I remember it so well because all of our family was together. My Dad was pretty busy most of the time with his work so we didn’t always have much time to do things together when I was a younger.
So for these reasons, is was a really special occasion that I’ll never forget.
PART – 3 Discussion
Why childhood is important?
As far as I’m concerned, childhood is the purest and happiest period of human life without any concerns, stress and wickedness. Every child is carefree, and two things that matter to them are playing and enjoying life. In addition, as youngsters are fluid and flexible in the way they approach things, everyone, especially parents, should spend constructive times with them because this is the period of life for learning and absorbing things in order to form their character and personality. More precisely, longitudinal research has shown that a person’s successes, health and emotional wellbeing have their roots in early childhood. Childhood experiences define the way we behave and react in certain circumstances in later stages in our lives and our cognitive developments occur faster at that time. Childhood is a magical stage in our lives and has immense importance for the later stages of our lives.
How did you spend your childhood?
I spent my childhood by playing most of the time and then
being with my family and friends. I had many friends and we used to gather and play in our yards, especially hide and seek. I remember I didn’t like the fact that I always got caught by my friends. When I was at home, though, I did the drawing, painting and dancing most the time. So, I would say that I really enjoyed my childhood and the most vivid thing that I still remember is my mother begging me to complete my homework. My parents were so caring and loving and I always loved to visit different places with them.
Who was your childhood hero? Did you want to be like him/her?
When I was a child my hero was the Superman. As I can remember, there was a TV series called ‘Smallville’ and the leading character in this TV series was a teenage boy whose name was Clark Kent. Clark was adopted and he had super human’s powers and I was entirely surprised by that because he was saving people all the time using his power. But as a little kid, the thing that impressed me the most was that he wasn’t only saving good people but also the bad one who tried to hurt him and his beloved ones. Although he was my hero, I didn’t want to be like him but like his girlfriend, Lana Lang, you know this is natural for a girl of my age. After this show, I always wanted to have a superhero in my life and Superman was an indispensable part of my early childhood.
