Sample Answer:-

The given column graph depicts the increase in the percentage of urban population in Africa, Asia, Latin America/Caribbean and the whole world from 1950 to 2000 and also gives predictions for 2030. It can be seen that population escalated in all given areas of the world and is expected to grow further.

In 1950, Latin America and the Caribbean had the maximum urban population, which constituted 42% of the total population. In contrast, Asia and Africa had much lesser people living in cities at 14% and 12% of the total population respectively. Just under a third of the population was of urbanites in the whole world in 1950.

In 2000, Africa and Asia saw an almost threefold increase in urban population. In both these areas city population became approximately 38% of the total. Latin America and the Caribbean had over two thirds of the population in cities. However, the whole world had almost equal number of rural and urban people in 2000.

It is predicted that by 2030 the urban population will continue to grow in all areas by 10-15%. Almost 80% of people in Latin America and Caribbean are expected to live in cities, whereas in the whole world the percentage of urbanites is estimated to be 60%.

Overall, it is clear that urban population has grown in all given areas and is expected to grow in the future.

General Writing Task 1:-

Your internet connectivity works very slowly. Write a letter to complain to Internet Service Provider.

In your letter

  • Introduce yourself
  • Describe difficulties you face
  • Say what you would decide if the difficulty persists

Sample Answer-

Dear Manager,

I write to complain about the slowest internet connectivity I have ever experienced. I subscribed for an ‘unlimited internet users’ plan with a four-megabyte-per-second (Mbps) upload speed one month back. My customer identification number is 123456566.

Last month, your company representative named Jeremy was doing door-to-door marketing. His sales pitch interested me, and he offered me a demonstration test of the internet speed. The speed of uploading and downloading files then was good enough to convince me to buy the service. After one week of subscription, the internet sped began to move at a snail’s pace especially in uploading files. For uploading big files, I spend a seemingly interminable period watching the status bar on my computer inch forward. Upload speeds are so frustratingly slow that oftentimes, it is quicker for me to copy the files onto a USB stick and drive it over to clients. Such is life in our country, where upload connections are among the worst in developing world.

I have decided to switch over to other internet service provider if the speed issue is not addressed.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Arya Patel

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT) –

Do you think teachers should be evaluated by students? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Sample Answer:-

In bygone days, teachers and students had a strong relation. Now we are living in 21st century which reflects modern era. Many changes have taken place. Many schools believe that students should evaluate their teachers. However, I oppose this trend and this essay would shed light on my viewpoint.

There are numerous reasons to support that pupils should not evaluate their teachers. Firstly, students may take revenge. In the class, teachers scold their students many times. So, at the time of feedback, students may give negative information of the teacher. Next, students may start feeling superior. When authorities give a chance to learners to give feedback of teachers they think that they are higher than the teachers and so, do not take them serious in the class.

Further teachers would not be able to give their best performance in the class. They know that their students would give marks to them and authorities might take a strict action against them. Also, if teacher knows that she teaches well in the class but pupils gives a negative feedback then he/she might get demoralized. Thus, this may degrade their performance in the class.

To recapitulate, I would state that students not assess their teachers’ performance because this may spoil the environment of the class. Of the authorities want to improve the academic result of the students then they can monitor the teachers themselves.

  • Who were you with

How did you feel about getting up early that day?

A few years ago, I was supposed to catch an early morning flight to the UK, from my city. I was slated to go out on a week long holiday with my family, and we were involved in a lot of last minute packing the previous afternoon. Just as we got done with everything, a friend of mine called and invited us to his house for a casual get-together. I tried to politely decline the invitation, starting that we needed to be fresh for our travels the next morning. But, my friend would have nothing of it, and he kept insisting, overriding every excuse I came up with, with his signature brand of goodhearted emotional blackmail.

Finally, I discussed it with my wife and yielded. We drove down to his house at 7pm, and as we entered the driveway, we noticed there were a lot of cars parked there. It was not a small get together; instead, there were a lot of people. Right away, my wife and I knew that this party was going to go on till late. That’s how it usually is with large groups of people; once the conversations start, and the wine begins to flow, no one wants to go home, because it is too much fun.

So, we entered, exchanged pleasantries, and made ourselves comfortable. Soon we started getting involved in different conversations, and began to enjoy the delicious starters that kept coming. The night went on, and after dinner my friend put on some music and got everyone to dance. I must admit, it was a lot of fun, but by the time we got in our car to drive back home, it was already past 2am.  Tired from partying, but grinning ear to ear, we reached home. There was no point sleeping now, because we had to reach the airport at 5am, but we slept anyways. Our alarms rang in what seemed like just a few minutes. We freshened up and quickly headed to the airport, heaving a sigh of relief that we had managed to open our eyes so early in the morning, after such a late night. I did not feel very enthusiastic about waking up early that day, but after a few cups of coffee at the airport, I was alert once again, and excited about the trip.

PART – 3 Discussions

Who usually gets up early – young people or old people?

Old people usually get up earlier than young people; because with age it is noticed that people’s requirement for sleep reduces. They also watch much less of TV, and spend less time online or partying till late. So old people tend to wake up early, while young people often prefer to sleep in till a little late.

Will working till late at night influence the next day’s work?

Working till late at night is likely to influence the next day’s work. Working till late exhausts the body and mind, and reduces the efficiency of a person, the next morning. He has a tough time waking up itself, and from then on, he tends to work slowly, with lesser focus, and lesser enthusiasm.

Do young Indians stay up till late in night?

Young Indians, like young people everywhere else, tend to stay up till late in the night very frequently. Most young Indians have long working hours, after which they g home, relax, and have their dinner with their family. Only after this do they find the time and energy to go and hang out with friends. Since they meet up with friends late, they also tend to stay out till late. Those who do not go out, find their relaxation by suffering the net or watching TV till way past midnight.

Is it easy for you to get up early?

It is easy for me to get up early because I am not a very late sleeper. I tend to have quite a disciplined routine, and I usually start feeling sleepy by 11pm. This ensures that I wake up fresh in time for my morning walk. Because sleeping early has been a habit of mine since many years, I do not find it tough to wake up early, as well.

What do you do to guarantee a good sleep?

I have a light dinner, enjoy good conversations with my family, watch relaxing shows on TV as opposed to action movies that could fire up my mind, and then I retire in bed with a good book. I make sure not to drink coffee or other stimulants after 6 pm. These things guarantee a good sleep for me.
