Tips to make impressive sentences in IELTS writing task 2 and score 7
Many test takers score low in IELTS writing in spite of using unique ideas, great vocabulary and proper structure and it’s a matter of stress for them. Now many of you will be thinking that same happened with me and not able to diagnose the reason behind it. Let me reveal the secret for you, it’s the sentence structure that becomes a barrier for you. Sentence structure is an essential element of assessing skills. If you improve the structure of a sentence, you would see the difference it makes.
Let’s see with the help of an example,
Simple sentence- Co-education schools are good for the kids. They learn more effectively. They also gain more understanding of the outside world.
Complex Sentence– It is considered that co-education schools are the best institutions for children as in these schools, they are not only able to learn more effectively here but also gain better understanding of living in the outside world.
The above said examples are grammatically correct but are not impressive enough to score good band score as they are simple sentences and they lack connectivity and flow. On the other side there is a complex sentence that delivers the same message but is more impressive and enriched with vocabulary and connectors.
How to improve a sentence structure?
You can improve the structure of the sentence using various ways to make it better, effective and impressive enough leading to good band score.
1. Use of Sentence Connectors
Use various connectors like-
– Moreover,
– On the other hand,
– In contrast to this,
– In addition to this,
– However, Nevertheless
-On the contrary
-Even so
– Not with standing
-Though
-Otherwise etc.
Connectors play an important role in writing as these connectors make connectivity between the sentences and this shows that there is no lack of flow in the ideas or thoughts. So, if you use the connectors between the sentences the quality of your writing will improve and the chances of hike in the scores will also go up. Keep in mind that you should not use connectors frequently.
2. Use of synonyms
One of the effective means of improving a sentence is when you replace normal words with synonyms to improve quality of writing.
For example-
Amazing – Incredible, Fantastic, Fabulous, Astonishing, Extraordinary
Answer – Respond
Awful – Terrible, Abominable, Dreadful
Bad – Evil, Spoiled, Imperfect, Infamous, Dismal
Beautiful – Gorgeous, Ravishing, Dazzling, Exquisite, Stunning
Begin – Initiate, Commence, Inaugurate
Big – Huge, Enormous, Gigantic, Humongous, Substantial, Mammoth
Break – Rupture, Fracture, Shatter
Calm – Serene, Peace, Tranquil
Come – Approach, Arrive
Cool – Chilly, Frosty, Icy
Cut – Chop, Slash, Slit
Dangerous – Hazardous, Risky, Precarious
Here, remember you should use accurate synonyms and vocabulary as if you try to add any word forcefully the sense of your sentence will change and in spite of getting good scores you will be penalized.
3. Convert simple to complex sentences
Simple Sentence | Complex Sentence |
He confessed his crime. | He confessed that he was guilty. OR He confessed that he had committed a crime. |
He bought his uncle’s factory. | He bought the factory that belonged to his uncle. |
He worked hard to pass the test. | He worked hard that he might pass the test. |
Only Hindus can enter this temple. | If you are not a Hindu, you cannot enter this temple. |
In his childhood, Lincoln did not go to school. | When he was a child, Lincoln did not go to school. |
On seeing the lion, the hunter climbed up a tree. | When he saw the lion, the hunter climbed up a tree. |
Using complex sentences is a sign of advanced level of English. If you can incorporate or master the art of using complex sentences without making any grammatical mistakes, you are bound to score 7 band or even above.
