How to write an effective Introduction for IELTS Writing Task 2
- In writing task 2, introduction is the first part of IELTS essays, therefore it should be impressive so that when examiners will read and it will give them a good first impression of what to expect in the rest of the essay, just like in- person, first impression is the last impression.

Common problems to write an introduction
- Giving too general and unnecessary information about topic- most of theessays start with “nowadays” or “in modern era” followed by general information about the topic. In all IELTS essays, it is not necessary to write time period in the very starting of essays.
- Emphasizing to write a ‘look’ in order to entertain examiners: candidates should keep in mind that this is an IELTS exam, not a university essay. Remember, extra points should not be there for making it interesting by writing additional information.
- Not adding relevant thesis statement: as per the pattern of introduction, this is the most important sentence in IELTS essays, which actually provides answer of all questions of the statement.
- Using an informal style: in IELTS writing task 2, conditions are expected to write in scholastic and formal way. Avoid writing informal and idiomatic language.

- General statement: the very first sentence of task 2 should be a general statement that provides an overview of the topic. This is essential because it tells readers, what the essay is about and tells examiners that candidates have understood the question topic properly. A general statement is often referred to as a hook, which means the brief introduction of a topic; it actually helps readers to maintain their interest in an essay. Therefore, general statement is not only introduces the topic but it also captures the attention of readers.
Example statement:
Juvenile delinquency is on increase. Suggest some reasons and solutions of it.
General statement:
One among the social evils is crime which has become a grave concern for community as a whole.
- Above sentence is an example of writing general statement of a topic. Here, the topic of the statement was “juvenile delinquency “crimes which are committed by teenagers and youngsters. Therefore, the hook of this essay will be co- related to crimes which are done by youngsters.
2. Paraphrasing of statement: paraphrasing is a restatement of the meaning of a provided statement by using other words.
- Before paraphrasing, candidates need to make sure that they have understood the clear meaning of the provided statement. Remember paraphrasing is more than just changing the words. In particular, paraphrase needs to make sense and still convey the original message. Thus, candidates should read the statement a couple of times to make sure they have understood the meaning of statement properly.
Ways to do Paraphrasing
- Using synonyms:
- Synonyms are different words that convey the same meaning.
For example: constant= stable
- However, some synonyms can have a slightly different meaning
For example: interesting= fascinating
Fascinating has a strong meaning than interesting. Therefore candidates need to make sure that the words they are using. Convey the same level of meaning as the original one.
EXAMPLE: ORIGINAL
Many people think that cars should not be allowed in the city centers
Synonyms – think- believe
Cars- motor
City centers –urban areas
Paraphrasing:
Many people believe that motor vehicles should be banned in urban areas.
2. Changes in the sentence structure
- Active to passive
- Passive to active
- Order to statement
Another way to paraphrase is to change sentence structure. This includes active, passive voice and by changing the provided order to clause.
- Active to passive
Example: earthquake destroyed the city
Paraphrasing: the city was destroyed by earthquake.
In above sentence, the subject earthquake becomes the object and object (the city) becomes the subject.
2. Passive to active
Example: public transport services were improved by the high authorities.
Paraphrase – (active)
The high authorities improved the public transport services.
3. Order of statement
Some sentences can be a single clause; some sentences can be made up of two or three clauses.
For example: it is difficult to imagine, life without water.
Paraphrase: life without water, it is difficult to imagine.
3. Thesis Statement:
A thesis is an Idea which is put for consideration, especially one point that is going to be discussed in the whole essay. Thesis is extremely imperative in order to provide answer of assigned question.
Question statement: there is a good deal of evidence that increasing car use is contributing to global warming and having other undesirable effects on people’s health and well- being.

- Thesis statement: this essay agrees that increasing use of motor vehicles is contributing to increase global temperatures and certain health issues.
