In IELTS speaking test you cannot afford any mistake but sometimes due to nervousness you can say many things that can reduce your sores. You should be aware of the silly mistakes you can commit and can affect on your fluency and even can also de motivate you. You should know the do’s and don’t in the exam. So today in this segment we will discuss 4 Things to avoid in IELTS speaking test that Decrease Your Band Score.

Excess Use of Idioms

Usually in your IELTS speaking training sessions you are told to use idioms as it can increase your scores. Though using idioms can definitely make your scores high but there are some other factors also that contribute to get good score. Some of these factors are structure, grammar, vocabulary, content etc. Let me clear you one thing that if you think that using lots of idioms will hike your scores than you are wrong. In fact, you would be penalized for overly using them. Hence, use idioms only when it is required to add cohesion in your speaking and this can happen when you concentrate on answering the question effectively rather than merely using idioms.

Over Using Connectors

Connectors are the words or phrases that help us to connect our ideas. Some connectors like Moreover, therefore, however, on the other hand, in comparison to this etc. can be used to get Band 7 or above. Keep in mind, as overusing of idioms can reduce your scores same is the case with connectors if you will use them excessively than you will be penalized. Many students take this for granted and try to use more and more connectives which ultimately reduce the band score in IELTS speaking. So, connectors only when it is needed so that it comes out naturally and does not look awkward as they are used forcefully.

Adequate Use of Advanced Vocabulary

Vocabulary is very important for speaking test and if you use vocab of advanced level than it is cherry on the cake and you can easily score Band 8 or above. But only vocabulary is not the key to success but other factors like Fluency, coherence, cohesion, grammar and punctuation are also important to achieve high scores. Now there are many students who have pocket full of advance vocabulary but they fail to achieve good scores because they lack in other areas.

Another thing is you should know how and where to use any word. If you use heavy word at a place where it doesn’t suit you will lose scores.   So if you want to use advance vocabulary you should know its proper meaning and the way to implement it. For this you should practice a lot and get exposed to new words by listening to podcasts, songs or watching movies, videos, talk shows, interviews, group discussions and most importantly, try to speak them yourself.

Saying Fillers Excessively

In IELTS speaking, fillers plays an important role as by using them you get some time to think and also enhance your fluency, but it should be used sensibly. Saying fillers in between affect your fluency and sometimes the listener don’t get the massage you want to convey him.  There are some common fillers that are used in IELTS speaking as speaking free from fillers may not be possible, but they should  be used in controlled manner so that it give an impressive look to your talk.
