Academic Writing Task 1:-
The graph below shows wheat exports in three different regions. Write a report for the university lecturer describing the information shown below. Make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer –
The line graph is a study of wheat exports in three regions of the world, viz. Australia, Canada, and the European community, from 1985 to 1990.
Fluctuations in the case of Canada were huge, although it made no improvement. While the European community started off at a lower rate, it was the only region, which made any result. Australia’s ratio considerably declined.
Canada’s exports in 1985 were around 19 MT. during the first year they decreased well below 18 millions thereafter they found a somewhat sharp rise to as much as 25 million by 1998. A sharper fall followed next year to 18 millions, a reduction of 7 millions. They then shot up to 19 million next year. Exports of the Europeans community dropped initially, from 17 MT to 13.5 MT. next two years found a marginal increase and the final year’s recorded better performance, 21 MT the highest in 1989. Australia’s figure, the lowest in 1985. Had a nominal increase next year. Thereafter, however, their exports weaned off steadily to 11 millions.
To sum up, while the European community enhanced their wheat exports, Canada made no progress and Australia disappointed.

You want to apply for the following job. Write a letter to Mr. Moore describing your previous experience and explaining why you would be suitable for the job of waiter/ waitress required for evening work. Some experience necessary.
Sample Answer –
Dear Mr. Moore,
This is in response to your advertisement in the ‘Daily Mirror’ of date, inviting applications for the post of waiter/waitress in your hotel for evening work. I give below my particulars for your perusal and consideration.
I am a final year’s arts student of M.G. College in the city. I have been working part-time in the evenings over the last two years, primarily to gain experience. Moreover, the money thus earned comes in handily. I have mostly been working as waiter since that is one job that is easily available. Last year I had been working at the ‘Grand’ for about a year. I had put in excellent service, they were most satisfied with me, but since they are locked out due to labor problems I am on the lookout for another job. I am not the bargaining kind, neither I am politically inclined.
In view of the foregoing, I hope to be favored with an interview. Thanking you in anticipation and assuring you of my sincere services,
Yours faithfully,
Name

Millions of people moved to English speaking countries such as Australia Britain or America, in order to study at school, college or university. Why do so many people want to study in English? Why is English such an important international language? Give reasons for your answer.
Sample Answer –
English is the language of success and it is the medium to explore the world of literature, new trends in lifestyle, science and technology. In many of the developed and the developing countries of the world, English still reins supreme as the official language and most of the administrative and business transactions and correspondence are done in English. To be good at English, therefore, is an essential requirement to excel on life in the changed global scenario called globalization.
The foremost reason, why millions of people wish to study in English is its dynamism. English has become the language of progress as researches in medicine, science, industry; trade and commerce are being done in it. Everything international is now in this language and it is proactive to learn English. Rather than learning many languages. For example, the majority of publications are in English.
Secondarily, English has other reasons to be considered as a true transitional language. It is the richest in literature and vocabulary. Almost 18% of people all over the world speak English and it is a good percentage when considering the diversity of languages and demographic structure of nations. Besides, learning English has become a need of the day, since people identify it as the language of anything global. Since entrepreneurs focus on global customers, they are forced to use English. Today job aspirants are aware that their proficiency in English itself will fetch them a job.
In brief, many people interact and do business globally, demolishing geographical and social barriers. They need a language to accommodate every branch of knowledge on a transitional basis and English fulfils it. PART – 2 Cue Card
Describe your favorite season.
You should say
- The name of the season, and during which months its stays
- What climatic changes happen during this season?
- Why you like that season
What do you do to enjoy the season, in your free time?
Sample answer:
In India, we do not experience different seasons for equal time spans, because the country is located near the equator. However, because of global warming, the summer season usually extends for almost 6 months a year. This is the reason I like winter the most. Winter starts in mid- November in India, and lasts till mid-February, which is about 3 months. I like winter because the climate remains pleasant, dry, energizing and soothing but, we don’t feel any need to switch on the fan.
One more reason for favoring winter is a availability of fruits and vegetables. During winters, we get many seasonal fruits and vegetables that prove to be healthy and tasty additions to our diets. It is also said that such a diet, rich in a variety of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables, keeps our bodies fit and healthy, throughout the year. I also like to wear woolen clothes, and winter is the only time of the year I can indulge myself. People in my city often wake up early in the morning and go for walks, or to the gym to exercise. Winter season also enhances work efficiency, because of two good reasons. The first reason being that we don’t perspire much, so we can work for longer periods of time; and the second reason being, our appetites remain high throughout the season, so our higher food intake makes it possible for us to devote more energy to work.
I often go to the beautiful lake near my home for a morning walk, and then I drink fresh fruit juices to keep myself fit and healthy. I can say that just three months of winter are capable of energizing us for the rest of the year.
PART – 3 Follow up Questions & Discussion
- How do seasonal changes affect children/ senior citizens?
Seasonal changes affect everyone, but they have a higher impact on senior citizens and children, because they tend to have weaker immune systems than the rest of the population. They may suffer from seasonal colds, fevers, or epidemics, which spread quicker when seasons are changing. What’s more seasonal changes also bring some emotional changes in humans. Such changes can be felt more by children and old people because they are often more sensitive. Hence, I think we should make some arrangements in advance to keep up people’s spirits, and ensure their wellbeing, when seasons are changing.
- What types of facilities are required to face seasonal changes at home?
The house should be equipped to face both, regular seasonal changes, and extreme seasonal conditions. The house should have proper air circulation and sun exposure, so that it remains fresh, safe, and germ free. There should also be some machines fitted in the house like air conditioners for the summer months, dehumidifiers for monsoons, and room heaters for winters, based on individual requirements.
- Why do people celebrate the starting of each season?
Historically, we used to survive on farming, and hence we used to either harvest crops, or sow seeds in the farms when seasons changed. Both these events had great importance, as farming was the main source of food and wealth that brought economic prosperity to India. Thus it become a pattern for people to celebrate the beginning of every season with festivities and cheer, as a way to remain in touch with nature and show gratitude to the changing seasons for sustaining life on earth.
