One of my favorite foods that is deeply associated with a traditional festival in my country is Biryani, particularly enjoyed during Eid celebrations.
Biryani is a flavorful rice dish made with basmati rice, marinated meat (usually chicken, mutton, or beef), and a blend of aromatic spices like saffron, cardamom, and cloves. It’s often garnished with fried onions, boiled eggs, and fresh herbs.
Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, is a significant festival where families come together to celebrate with feasting. Biryani is a staple dish during this time, as it symbolizes abundance and joy.
To make biryani, the meat is marinated in yogurt and spices for several hours to enhance its flavor. Then, the rice is partially cooked and layered with the marinated meat in a heavy pot. It’s cooked on low heat, allowing the flavors to meld together. Some variations also include a layer of fried onions and boiled potatoes, and it’s often served with raita, a yogurt-based side dish.
I love biryani not only for its rich taste and aroma but also for the memories associated with it. Preparing and sharing biryani with family during Eid brings everyone together, creating a warm and festive atmosphere. The complexity of flavors and the way each bite is a mix of tender meat and fragrant rice makes it a truly delightful dish.

Absolutely! Food often acts as a bridge, connecting people across different backgrounds. Sharing meals fosters a sense of community and belonging, especially during festive occasions when families and friends gather to celebrate.
How has globalization affected traditional foods?
Globalization has introduced a fusion of flavors and cooking techniques. While some traditional foods remain cherished, others have adapted to include international ingredients, which can enhance the culinary landscape but might also dilute original recipes. It’s a double-edged sword, really.
