IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You work in a company, and your manager is leaving soon. Write a letter to a colleague asking them to help arrange a farewell gift for your manager. In your letter:

– Express your feelings about the manager’s departure

– Propose a suitable farewell gift

– Suggest arrangements to organise the purchase.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Alison,

I hope you’re doing well. As you know, our manager, Mr. Thompson, will be leaving the company at the end of this month. I must say, I feel quite saddened by his departure. He has been a great mentor and leader, and his support and encouragement have made a significant impact on both my professional growth and the overall team environment.

I was thinking it would be a thoughtful gesture to arrange a farewell gift to show our appreciation. Given his passion for reading and leadership development, a high-quality leather-bound journal or a personalized fountain pen might be a fitting choice. Alternatively, we could consider a gift voucher from his favorite bookstore.

Would you be able to help coordinate this? Perhaps we could start a small collection from the team, and I’d be happy to contribute first. Let me know what you think, and we can decide on a budget and timeline.
