IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, rapid urbanisation has sparked debate over whether cities should expand vertically with numerous skyscrapers or horizontally with low-rise buildings. I strongly believe that developing vertical cities offers more benefits in terms of land efficiency, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure management.

Firstly, vertical expansion allows for better land utilisation, especially in densely populated cities. With limited land available, constructing tall buildings helps accommodate more people and businesses within the same area, reducing urban sprawl and preserving agricultural land. For instance, cities like Singapore and Hong Kong have successfully managed space constraints through vertical development.

Secondly, vertical cities can support efficient infrastructure and transportation. Concentrating residential and commercial areas within a compact zone reduces the need for long commutes, thus lowering traffic congestion and pollution. Additionally, essential services such as water supply, waste management, and electricity distribution can be managed more effectively in high-rise clusters than in sprawling horizontal cities.

However, critics argue that tall buildings can create overcrowded living conditions and strain city utilities. While this concern is valid, proper urban planning and the use of modern building technologies can address these challenges by ensuring adequate ventilation, green spaces, and sustainable design.

In conclusion, although both vertical and horizontal cities have their merits, I firmly believe that vertical urban development is a more practical and eco-friendly solution to the challenges of modern urbanisation.
