IELTS Writing Task 2

In some countries, criminal trials are broadcast on television so that the public can observe the legal process. While this practice promotes transparency, I believe its drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

Showing trials on TV can have some clear advantages. Firstly, it increases public awareness of how the justice system works. Many people have little understanding of court procedures, and televised trials can help educate them about legal rights and responsibilities. Secondly, such broadcasts promote transparency and accountability, as both the authorities and the accused are under public scrutiny. This openness may discourage corruption or bias in the judicial system.

However, there are significant disadvantages. Televised trials can turn serious legal matters into a form of entertainment, undermining the dignity of the court. The presence of cameras may also influence the behavior of witnesses, judges, or lawyers, who might act differently knowing they are being watched by millions. Moreover, public exposure can harm the reputation of the accused, even before a verdict is reached, violating the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.” This can cause emotional distress to the accused and their families.

In conclusion, although broadcasting trials can make the judicial process more transparent, the risks of sensationalism, bias, and damage to individuals’ reputations make it a less desirable practice. Therefore, the disadvantages of showing criminal trials on television clearly outweigh the advantages.
