SAMPLE ANSWER

One car journey that took much longer than I had expected was a trip from Amritsar to Delhi last December. My two college friends and I decided to drive there to attend our best friend’s wedding. The distance is about 450 kilometres, and we planned to leave early in the morning so we could reach by noon. Normally, it’s a six-hour drive, but this particular trip turned into an eleven-hour marathon.

Everything started smoothly, and the weather was pleasant when we began. However, after a couple of hours, the situation changed drastically. A thick layer of fog covered the highway, making visibility extremely poor. We had to reduce our speed to almost half for safety reasons. Later, we found that some sections of the road were under repair, which caused long traffic jams and diversions.

Initially, we were quite frustrated because we had been looking forward to reaching the venue on time. But after a while, we decided to make the best of it. We played music, cracked jokes, shared some snacks, and even stopped at a small roadside dhaba for tea. It actually turned into a bonding experience that we still talk about today.

By the time we finally reached Delhi, we were exhausted but relieved. Thankfully, we managed to attend the main ceremony, though we missed some early rituals. Looking back, even though the journey was tiring and took much longer than expected, it became one of the most memorable road trips of my life. It taught me to stay patient and enjoy the journey, no matter the obstacles.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car?
Travelling by car offers great flexibility and comfort. You can stop whenever you want, choose your own route, and carry as much luggage as you need. It’s also perfect for family trips or short vacations. However, the downside is that driving long distances can be tiring, and traffic congestion can waste a lot of time and fuel. Additionally, car maintenance and fuel costs can make it more expensive than public transport.

Why do some people prefer to drive rather than take public transport?
Many people prefer driving because it gives them independence. They don’t have to follow fixed schedules or wait for buses and trains. Moreover, travelling in your own car offers privacy and convenience, especially for families or groups. Public transport, on the other hand, can be crowded and uncomfortable, particularly during rush hours.

How can traffic congestion be reduced in big cities?
To reduce traffic congestion, governments can improve public transportation systems, such as metro networks and electric buses, to make them faster and more reliable. Encouraging carpooling and introducing congestion charges in busy areas can also help. In addition, promoting remote work and better urban planning can reduce the daily traffic load.

How do weather conditions affect road travel?
Weather plays a major role in road travel. Heavy rain, fog, or snow can significantly slow down traffic and increase the risk of accidents. Drivers need to be extra cautious, maintain safe distances, and sometimes even postpone their trips. On the other hand, pleasant weather can make long drives enjoyable and less stressful.
