IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Space exploration is much too expensive and the money should be spent on more important things. What is your opinion?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Space exploration has always fascinated humankind, but many people argue that it is a waste of money and that funds should instead be used to solve pressing issues on Earth. I partly agree with this view because, although space research is costly, it also brings long-term benefits.
On one hand, there are numerous urgent problems on our planet that require immediate financial attention. For instance, poverty, lack of clean water, and poor healthcare still affect millions of people worldwide. Spending billions of dollars on rockets and space stations seems unjustifiable when so many individuals struggle to meet their basic needs. Moreover, environmental issues such as global warming and deforestation demand urgent funding and innovative solutions. Directing resources toward these problems could significantly improve the quality of life for current and future generations.
On the other hand, investment in space exploration has contributed greatly to technological progress. Many everyday technologies, such as satellite communication, weather forecasting, and GPS navigation, have emerged from space research. Furthermore, exploring other planets may help humans find alternative resources or even new habitats if Earth becomes uninhabitable due to overpopulation or climate change. Therefore, completely stopping space programs could limit scientific advancement.
In conclusion, while it is true that governments should prioritize solving problems on Earth, space exploration should not be abandoned. A balanced approach—allocating funds for both terrestrial and space research—can ensure immediate welfare and long-term progress for humanity.
