IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Zoos are inhumane and should be abolished. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Zoos have long been a source of public entertainment and education; however, many argue that they are cruel institutions that deprive animals of their natural freedom. I partly agree with this view because while some zoos are inhumane, others play a vital role in conservation and education.
On one hand, it is undeniable that many traditional zoos keep animals in confined spaces, far smaller than their natural habitats. Such conditions can cause psychological stress, abnormal behaviour, and even premature death. For instance, large mammals like elephants or tigers require vast areas to roam freely, which most zoos fail to provide. In this sense, these institutions prioritize profit and human amusement over animal welfare, making them ethically unacceptable.
On the other hand, modern wildlife parks and sanctuaries have evolved with a strong focus on animal conservation and research. They provide safe environments for endangered species, helping to protect them from poaching and habitat loss. Moreover, educational programs in such facilities raise public awareness about biodiversity and inspire people to support wildlife protection. Without these conservation-oriented zoos, several species might already be extinct.
In conclusion, while traditional zoos that exploit animals for entertainment should indeed be abolished, modern zoos and wildlife sanctuaries that emphasize conservation and ethical treatment should continue to exist. Therefore, rather than eliminating zoos entirely, strict regulations should be implemented to ensure they operate humanely and contribute positively to animal welfare.
