IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, road accidents have become a growing concern in many countries. Some people argue that raising the minimum legal age for driving would be the most effective way to enhance road safety. However, I completely disagree with this view, as I believe that other factors such as driver education, stricter traffic enforcement, and better road infrastructure are far more effective solutions.

To begin with, simply increasing the legal driving age does not guarantee safer roads. Many accidents are caused not by young drivers’ immaturity but by careless or reckless behaviour among drivers of all ages. For example, speeding, drunk driving, and using mobile phones while driving are common causes of road mishaps. Therefore, rather than restricting driving opportunities for younger people, governments should focus on implementing strict penalties for traffic violations to discourage dangerous driving practices.

Furthermore, comprehensive driver education programs can play a crucial role in improving road safety. By offering practical training and awareness about road rules, defensive driving, and the consequences of negligence, new drivers—regardless of age—can be better prepared to handle real-life situations on the road. In countries like Japan, for instance, rigorous driver training has resulted in fewer accidents compared to nations with less demanding systems.

Lastly, improving road infrastructure can significantly reduce accidents. Better lighting, clear road signs, and regular maintenance can help prevent many crashes caused by poor conditions rather than driver age or experience.

In conclusion, increasing the minimum driving age is an overly simplistic approach that fails to address the real causes of road accidents. Governments should instead prioritize driver education, stricter law enforcement, and improved infrastructure to make roads truly safer for everyone.
