Do you like sending or receiving postcards?

Yes, I actually enjoy both. Although postcards aren’t as common nowadays, I think they’re a charming way to send greetings. Receiving a postcard feels more personal than a message on social media.

When was the last time you sent a postcard?

I sent one a couple of years ago when I visited Kerala. I bought a few scenic postcards and sent one to my cousin in Canada. It was a small gesture, but she loved it.

Do you think postcards will disappear in the future?

Probably. With digital communication being so fast and convenient, postcards are becoming more of a collector’s item or a nostalgic gesture rather than a regular practice.

How often do you look at yourself in the mirror?

I check the mirror at least a couple of times a day—mainly in the morning and before going out. It helps me make sure I look neat and presentable.

Have you ever bought a mirror for yourself?

Yes, I bought a small decorative mirror for my desk last year. It’s more for style, but I sometimes use it while working or studying to check my appearance.

Do you think people spend too much time looking in the mirror?

Some do. In today’s world where appearance is often emphasized on social media, it’s easy to become self-conscious. But I think a quick check is fine, as long as it doesn’t affect your self-esteem.

Do you often lose your keys?

Thankfully, not anymore. I used to misplace them often, but now I use a key holder near the main door, which makes it easier to keep track of them.

Have you ever forgotten your keys and gotten locked out?

Yes, once! I forgot my house keys inside and had to wait outside for an hour until my parents got home. Since then, I always double-check before leaving.

Where do you usually keep your keys?

I usually hang them on a hook near the entrance. It’s a habit that keeps me organized and saves time when I’m rushing out.

One particular time I helped someone with technology was when I assisted my grandmother in using her new smartphone.

She had recently switched from a basic keypad phone to a modern Android smartphone, and as expected, she found it quite overwhelming. The main problem was that she didn’t know how to make video calls, send messages, or even unlock the phone properly. Since I live with her, she asked me for help one afternoon.

I sat down with her and patiently explained the basic functions of the phone. I started by showing her how to unlock it using the fingerprint sensor, then moved on to how to access the calling app, add contacts, and make both regular and video calls. I also introduced her to WhatsApp, as most of our family members use it to stay connected. To make it easier, I changed the font size, simplified the home screen by organizing it with only the necessary apps, and even added shortcut buttons for calling close family members.

Her reaction was heartwarming. At first, she was a bit hesitant and kept saying she was too old to learn, but once she made her first successful video call to my aunt, her face lit up with joy. She felt proud and independent, and she thanked me multiple times. From then on, she became more confident in using her phone, and now she even sends me good morning messages regularly!

Overall, it was a very fulfilling experience for me because I not only helped her overcome her fear of technology but also strengthened our bond in the process.

Why do some people find it difficult to use modern technology?

There are several reasons why people struggle with modern technology. Firstly, older generations didn’t grow up with digital devices, so they often lack the foundational knowledge needed to use them confidently. Secondly, technology is evolving very quickly, and keeping up with the constant updates, new apps, and interface changes can be overwhelming. Lastly, some individuals might experience anxiety or fear of making mistakes, which discourages them from experimenting and learning on their own.

Do you think technology has made people’s lives easier or more complicated?

In general, I believe technology has made life easier, especially in terms of communication, education, healthcare, and entertainment. For example, we can now attend virtual meetings, shop online, or access any kind of information within seconds. However, it’s also true that technology has introduced some complications—like data privacy concerns, digital addiction, and the pressure to always stay connected. So, while it brings convenience, it also requires responsible usage to avoid negative impacts.

What can be done to help elderly people use technology more effectively?

There are a few effective strategies to support elderly people in learning technology. Firstly, family members or volunteers can dedicate time to teach them patiently, using simple language and step-by-step guidance. Secondly, device manufacturers can design user-friendly interfaces with larger fonts and voice assistants. Also, community centers can offer basic digital literacy workshops for senior citizens. The key is to build their confidence gradually and encourage consistent practice.

Do you think schools should teach students how to use technology?

Absolutely. In today’s world, digital literacy is just as important as reading and writing. Schools should not only teach students how to use computers or software but also cover online safety, digital etiquette, and critical thinking when using the internet. With proper guidance, students can learn to use technology not just for social media, but also for research, creativity, and innovation. This prepares them for both higher education and future employment.
