SAMPLE ANSWER
India is a diverse country where distinct regions have their own traditional items, which can range from clothes and food to handcrafted products. I belong to Punjab, a place known for a variety of traditional products that are essential for preserving our culture and helping people stay connected to their roots.
Here, I am going to shed some light on a specific historical product that is quite famous in my country, especially in Punjab, and that is none other than Phulkari. The word Phulkari translates to “flower work,” and it refers to a type of embroidery.
IELTS SPEAKING TEST
Although it was traditionally favoured by women in earlier times, it has now gained popularity among men as well.
I vividly remember trying Phulkari for the first time during my cousin’s wedding, specifically at the Jaago function. It looked absolutely stunning on me! Phulkari is essentially a heavy dupatta that can be paired with traditional attire by both men and women to enhance their overall look, especially during joyous events like weddings.
Additionally, Phulkari is used to decorate dupattas, kurtas, stoles, and even juttis. It is traditionally made on fabrics like silk, cotton, and chiffon. The embroidery is done with colourful silk threads and sometimes decorated with shiny stones to make it more beautiful. The bright, hand-stitched patterns make it special.
Today, machines can make Phulkari, but hand-stitched ones are still the best. They take a lot of time, hard work, and skill, which is why they cost more.
Whenever I wear Phulkari, I receive numerous compliments, which makes me feel elated—like a child in a candy store! It also deepens my connection to my roots. In Punjab, Phulkari holds special importance during significant ceremonies, particularly weddings, where brides often wear a red Phulkari.
To sum up, Phulkari is not just a traditional item but a symbol of cultural heritage in Punjab and India. It represents art, history, and the rich legacy of our ancestors.
