One personal project that I started with great enthusiasm but, unfortunately, didn’t complete was learning how to play the guitar.

I’ve always had a strong passion for music, and the guitar has fascinated me since childhood. About two years ago, I decided to finally pursue this interest. I bought a mid-range acoustic guitar, subscribed to a few online courses, and even joined a local weekend class. Initially, everything was going well. I learned basic chords, strumming patterns, and could even play a few simple songs like “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran.

The main reason I started this hobby was to relieve stress and do something creative in my free time. I was also inspired by my cousin, who is a professional guitarist. Watching him perform live made me want to learn and express myself through music too.

However, as time went by, my workload increased drastically. I was preparing for exams, attending coaching classes, and juggling multiple responsibilities. Slowly, my practice sessions became irregular. After a while, I just stopped altogether. I kept telling myself I’d return to it, but I never really did. The guitar still lies in my room, gathering dust.

Looking back, I feel a bit disappointed and guilty. I genuinely enjoyed playing, and I know that if I had managed my time better, I could have kept it going. But I also understand that sometimes, life gets in the way, and it’s okay. I still plan to return to it someday because the passion hasn’t died — it’s just been paused.

Why do people start hobbies but fail to continue them?

Many people start hobbies with excitement, but over time, their interest may fade, or other priorities may take over. Lack of time, motivation, or support can also be major factors. Sometimes, people realize the hobby isn’t as enjoyable or easy as they initially thought, so they give up midway.

Do you think it’s important to finish what you start? Why or why not?

Yes, in general, finishing what we start shows commitment and discipline. It gives a sense of achievement and builds confidence. However, I also believe it’s okay to walk away from something if it’s no longer serving us or aligning with our goals.

Are long-term projects or short-term hobbies better for personal growth?

Both can contribute to personal growth in different ways. Long-term projects teach patience, consistency, and resilience. Short-term hobbies, on the other hand, provide quick satisfaction and help manage stress. Ideally, a balance of both is good for overall development.
