Narendra Damodardas Modi

A. Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India since 2014, He was born in 1950 on 17 September in Vadnagar. Narendra Modi was the third child of Hiraben Modi and Damodardas Mulchand Modi. His father used to run a tea stall at Vadnagar railway station. There Narendra Modi helped his father at the tea stall as a child. He also ran another tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus later. In 1967, Modi accomplished his higher secondary education in Vadnagar. From the childhood, Modi had a gift of being rhetoric in debates, and his teachers and colleagues noted this. He was also involved in playing flamboyant characters in theatrical productions.

B. When eight years old, Modi discovered the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and began attending its local training sessions. There, Modi met Lakshmanrao Inamdar, who welcomed him as a junior cadet in the RSS and became his political mentor. While Modi was training with the RSS, he also met Vasant Gajendragadkar and NathalalJaghda, Bharatiya Jana Sangh leaders who were founding members of the BJP’s Gujarat unit in 1980.

Modi’s family arranged an engagement to a girl, Jashodaben Chimanlal Modi, leading to their marriage when they were teenagers. Sometime after that, he abandoned the further marital duties and left home, the couple going on to lead separate lives, neither marrying again, and the marriage was never known to the public until the year 2014 when he came to power.

C. Modi spent the subsequent two years travelling across Northern and North-eastern India, though few details of where he went have emerged. In interviews, Modi revealed that he visited many Hindu Ashrams founded by Swami Vivekanand.

In Ahmedabad, Modi rehabilitated his associate with Inamdar, who was based at the Hedgewar Bhavan (RSS headquarters) in the city. After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, he stopped waged for his uncle and turn out to be a full-time campaigner for the RSS, working under Inamdar. Just before the war, Modi took part in a non-violent protest against the Indian government in New Delhi, for which he was arrested; this has been cited as a reason for Inamdar electing to mentor him. Several years later Modi would co- author a biography of Inamdar, published in 2001.

Modi received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from school of open learning at University of Delhi. Five years later, in 1983, he received a Master of Arts degree in political science from Gujarat University.

Modi became the Prime Minister of India on 26 May 2014. He became the first Prime Minister born after India’s independence from the British Empire. His initial year as the prime minister saw noteworthy centralisation of power relative to previous administrations. At first lacking a majority in the Rajya Sabha, or upper house of Indian Parliament, Modi passed a number of ordinances to endorse his policies, leading to further centralisation of power. The government also approved a bill increasing the control that it had over the selection of judges and plummeting that of the judiciary.

E. In December 2014 Modi eradicated the Planning Commission, replacing it with the National Institution for Transforming India, or NITI Aayog. The move had the result of significantly centralising the power before with the planning commission in the person of the prime minister.

Modi annulled 1,200 outdated laws in first three years as prime minister; a total of 1,301 such laws had been revoked by previous governments over a span of 64 years. He started a monthly radio programme titled “Mann Ki Baat” on 3 October 2014. Digital India program was also launched under him, with the goal of ensuring that government services are available electronically, and all the government works be done through internet. This move was also taken to increase the digital literacy among people.

F. Modi initiated Ujjwala scheme to provide free LPG connection to countryside households. The scheme led to an increase in LPG consumption by 56% in 2019 as compared to 2014. In 2019, a law was passed to provide 10% reservation to economically weaker sections.

He was again sworn in as Prime minister on 30 May 2019. On 30 July 2019, Parliament of India avowed the practice of Triple Talaq as illegal, unconstitutional and made its indictable act from 1 August 2019 which is considered to be in effect from 19 September 2018. On 5 August 2019, the government moved resolution to scrap Article 370 in the Rajya Sabha, and also reorganize the state with Jammu and Kashmir serving as one of the union territories and Ladakh region detached out as a separate union territory.

In 2019, Ayodhya dispute was resolved. The Supreme Court ordered the land to be offered over to a trust to build the Hindu temple. It also ordered the government to give substitute 5-acre land to Sunni Waqf Board for the persistence of building a mosque.
