Do you like watching TV?
I don’t get time really to watch TV, and I don’t like the fact that you have no choice about what to watch, so no, I would say I don’t really like watching normal TV; I much prefer streaming something on my iPad and watching it when I like.
How often do you watch TV?
I’d say maybe only a few times a month when there is a good football match on. I prefer watching football on TV with other people around because it’s a great atmosphere, but if it’s a normal TV show, I will watch it alone at home on my tablet.
What kind of TV programmes do you like to watch?
I like dramas and thrillers. I don’t really like anything that is not set in the real world, so I’m not a big fan of sci-fi or fantasy, although I have been getting into the latest season of Game of Thrones. I also like to watch documentaries about military history, especially about the Second World War.

What are the most popular TV shows in your country?
The two most popular genres are soaps and reality TV. Soaps like Coronation Street have always been popular because people get to know the characters really well, and the storylines can be quite gripping. I’ve no idea why reality TV is popular; I can’t stand it, all those C-list celebrities trying to become popular again. I would rather watch paint dry, to be honest.
Do you like watching TV shows from other countries?
Yes, most of the programmes I watch are from the United States. Networks like HBO and Netflix have the biggest budgets and, as a result, can make some really high-quality shows. I don’t think Game of Thrones could be made without a huge budget, and America is probably the only country to make a TV show on that scale.

Has the internet affected your viewing habits?
Absolutely, I watch most TV shows on the internet now, rather than a normal TV. There are so many streaming services, like Netflix offering on-demand TV, and it suits me to be able to watch what I want when I want. I also binge-watch a series of TV shows and watch a whole series in a day rather than waiting for the next episode.
What is your favourite TV show?
There was an American show called Fargo that I really loved. It was an adaptation of a film made about 15 years ago. The plot lines and characters were really interesting, and the dialogue was well-written. Unfortunately, there has only been one season of it so far, so I have to wait another year to see the next season.
What was your favourite show when you were a child?
I was a bit of a strange child because I didn’t like cartoons like most other kids. But I loved a few shows, like The A-Team, Knight Rider, and Air Wolf. They were so cool and always had great action scenes. I was a bit obsessed with violent action films when I was a kid. When I think about them though, they weren’t really all that violent compared to shows these days, I don’t think one person was ever killed in any of those programmes.

SAMPLE ANSWER
India is a country of festivals and celebrations. But here I would like to talk about one of the most popular festivals of North India. It is called Diwali. It is celebrated every year either in the month of October or November. The festival celebrates victory of good over evil and its historical significance is related with Sikh and Hindu religions.
According to the Hindu mythology, Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. The people of Ayodhya welcomed him by illuminating and decorating the place with earthen lamps.

The preparations of the festival goes on for a month and is celebrated with great pomp and show. People renovate, clean and decorate their houses. Houses are decorated with light bulbs and many people make floral or geometric patterns on the floor by using different colours, which is called rangoli. People exchange gifts and sweets with their loved ones. In the evening, people worship Goddess Lakshmi who is considered the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Various delicacies including sweets are also prepared on this day. Children love to burst fire crackers and wear new clothes.
I too enjoy celebrating this festival with my friends and family as it keeps us connected with our tradition. The only thing I dislike about the festival is the bursting of fire crackers. It leads to air and noise pollution which leads to certain health problems among elderly and the young ones.

Are traditional holidays disappearing?
As communities become more focused on enhancing the economic and modern way of life, traditional festivals may fall by the wayside. This led to diminishing the importance of traditional events.
Do children like to learn about traditional festivals?
Yes, children today were not aware of the rituals which are followed by us from our ancestors. While we are doing those rituals they see it as new. Some kids start questioning about the rituals like, the reason being the rituals. At one point they start learning it.

Is music important to traditional festivals?
Yes, music plays a significant role in traditional festivals. Traditional music often accompanies specific rituals and performances during these festivals.it creates a good vibe and festival atmosphere to the celebrations.
What is the importance of traditional festivals?
They unite people and they come together for the sole purpose of celebration and happiness. Traditional festivals also help us embrace our culture and religion.

What’s the difference between festivals now and in the past?
I think the main difference between festivals now and in the past is the way of celebration. Earlier people celebrated festivals with reverence, but now people have forgotten the meaning behind the festivals and they started to celebrate to enjoy the moment.
Do you think western festivals like Christmas are replacing traditional festivals in your country?
Yes, nowadays children are influenced by western movies and Hollywood films. They start celebrating western festivals like Halloween and Christmas by decorating trees and asking gifts from their parents on Christmas.
