IELTS SPEAKING INTERVIEW

PART – 1 INTRO

What is your full name?

My name is Sejal Ranuki.

How may I address you?

You may address me as Sejal.

May I see your ID?

Sure, here it is.

What kind of family is yours? Is it of a typical family structure?

My family is large, I have Dad , Mom, two sisters ,four brothers. Our relations are very strong. We usually help with each other. I am very proud of my family. My brothers, sisters and I has already got married. Everyone has one or two children. I think my family is a typical one.

What do you think are the differences between families in and past and today, and what have caused these changes?

About 20 years ago they were large in India. Each family had at least 4 or 5 children, but nowadays they are small, especially in big cities. In countrysides they have no more than two children. The main reason for this change is that we have the family planning policy, which allows us to have one child. This policy has been executed for about 20 years.

Do you like (to learn about) history?

Yes, I am a big fan of reading historical stories. When I was a little boy, I always took the historical books from my father’s bookshelf and read about historical events. I feel that history not only helps me teach, but also gives me a better understanding of human society.

What historical event do you find most interesting?

Personally I am fond of the Battle of Red Cliffs which happened during the early period of the Three Kingdoms. This was a decisive battle at the end of the Han Dynasty. It was also a typical battle in Chinese history renowned for a smaller and weaker army defeating a larger and stronger foe.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Visiting a nice café, especially during the weekends, is one of my favourite things to do. Thankfully, there are plenty of cafes in my old town to help me do that, and today, I will talk about one of those cafes here.

As I have already mentioned, the café, I visit, is located in my own town, but it is kind of far away from where I actually live. Of course, at one point, it used to be rather close to my home, but it had relocated a couple of years ago to a different place due to some road construction and city expansion works. But, in either case, I am glad that the café is still in operation because it is certainly a bit different from other cafes in the town. And you will know why I am saying this in a minute.

Anyway, I don’t really visit this café to enjoy any kinds of foods, rather I visit it, mainly to enjoy coffee and fruit juices, even though this café certainly serves some of the most healthy and delicious foods in town such as mushroom pepper steak, Italian pasta and Thai soups, among many other items. But, as far as I am concerned, I just love their freshly-made fruit juices, coffee, and light music.

Here it is worth mentioning that I am a very familiar face in this café, obviously because I visit it quite often so they don’t really mind if I just sit there for hours, doing literally nothing.

I visit this café, mainly because it is not only surrounded by a nice environment but also has a rather pleasing atmosphere inside it. Besides, the very nice and professional behaviour of all the staff members there is also something that encourages me to visit this place again and again. Last but not least, I visit this café because they serve different things on different days, instead of serving just the same kinds of foods every day, to make things a bit more interesting for its customers.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

1. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO GO TO A CAFÉ?

I think young adults like going to a café. When you’re a kid or a teenager, cafés aren’t entertaining enough to hang out at. But when you’re in your twenties, they’re a nice place to meet up with your friends after work or on the weekends. Plus, retired people also like going to cafés because the environment there is super relaxed. It’s a nice place to have a chat over coffee or tea.

2. WHY DO YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE STUDYING IN A CAFE INSTEAD OF AT HOME?

It seems to me that young people like studying at a café instead of at home because it’s a nice change of scene . When you’re studying at home, you might get sick of being in the same place all the time.

Plus, you can get distracted by your roommates or family members. Cafés offer a nice, relatively quiet atmosphere where you can focus on your own thing. It also makes studying a more appealing activity because you can enjoy a nice tea or coffee while you work.

3. DO CHINESE PEOPLE LIKE TO GO TO A CAFÉ? IF NOT, WHAT ARE THEIR SOCIAL PLACES?

Well, although not every Chinese person loves going to cafe, there are more young people who have adapted to coffee culture, and enjoy drinking coffee and hanging out with their friends at coffee shops. It’s a trend. But honestly, older people in China, like people of my parents’ generation , rarely go to a cafe. They are more used to having a meal with others at a restaurant to socialize.

4. DO OLDER PEOPLE IN CHINA LIKE DRINKING COFFEE?

No, I don’t think so. As far as I know, most middle-aged and senior people don’t have the habit of drinking coffee. Very few of them have taken a liking to coffee. I think it’s mainly because they didn’t grow up with a coffee culture.

Instead, they were surrounded by a strong tea culture. Plus, it’s true that coffee is fairly new in China and just got popular. I bet 30 or 40 years later when young people get older, there will be more regular coffee drinkers than today.
