SAMPLE ANSWER
The 3-line graphs in the chart show the actual and projected populations of Someland for 150 years beginning in 1940. It is divided into 2 segments: the actual figures up to 2005 and the projected figures thereafter up to 2090. While time has been plotted along the X axis, population has been mapped along the Y-axis.
The 3 lines represent the populations for people belonging to the age groups of up to 19 years, 20 to 60 years, and above 60 years.
The graphs show that in 1940, the population of the groups stood at 220, 150, and 10 million respectaively. Thereafter, there was steady expansion of the population of the younger and older age-groups until 2005, while the number of people between 20 and 60-after recording continuous growth for 50 years – reached plateau between after 1990. In 2005, while the population of young people was825 million, there were 375 million men and women in the age group 20-60, and the number of the elderly stood approximately at 75 million.
Moving on to the future, the younger population is projected to peak at 1125 million after 2040, and is expected to drop steadily thereafter, reaching 950 million in 2090. Similarly, the population between 20 and 60 years is expected to decline slowly to reach 240 million in 2090. On the other hand, the number of elderly people is expected to rise steadily to 450 million in 2090. Population of the elderly will surpass that of the second age group around 2050.
To summarize, the number of people in Someland aged 60 and below is predicted to grow continuously until around 2040 and then fall steadily. However, the population of elderly people is expected to rise throughout the period under reference indicating that after 2040, the birth rate in Someland will decline, while the life expectancy will rise concomitantly.
