The bar charts show the world proportion of wage workers by income and gender, and the percentage of business owned by women. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
SAMPLE ANSWER
The first chart shows the proportion of wage workers around the world by income status and by gender over the age of 15 years. The general figure, which does not include income level, shows that 24% of women and 37% of men work for a wage. In low income groups, working for a wage is not the norm for either gender. Only 7% of women and 18% of men are in these positions. In the middle income bracket, the percentage of women working for a wage triples to 20% and almost doubles for men at 34%. Once we get into the high income bracket, the percentage again doubles for women to 45% and also increases significantly for men, to 56%.
The second chart shows the proportion of businesses owned by women. Around the world only a third of businesses have a female owner, though in Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and North America, female ownership of businesses is around 50%. So the regions of East Asia and the Pacific, Latin America, South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa are the ones where women have lower ownership of businesses, particularly in South Asia at only 18%.
Observing these two charts together, it is clear that women have less presence than men in the workforce as both wage earners and business owners. The charts are measuring the proportions between the sexes from two different databases, not the actual numbers of people. However, as women are more represented in business owning than wage earning it might be more effective for women to start their own businesses rather than look for wage paying jobs.
