Choosing the right word

As a leader, you’re tasked daily with choosing the right words to communicate on various matters. Pick what you say, and how you say it, carefully, making sure that what you do truly reflects your professional goals and the values that define you. The trick to talking to others-particularly when it comes to business matters, is to be both compelling and clear about what you say and even how it aligns with your values and your vision. When you’re compelling and clear, you will more likely-

Give life to your visions. When you are casual with word choice about some goal, dream or vision, what you say usually lacks legs. It shows you have not really thought carefully about it, how to go about achieving it, and who will play a role in it. Being specific about the who, what, where and when of the vision transforms it from a wish into a more viable, concrete idea that, with the buy-in, can take form and be acted upon by your team. Using the right words and language is a tactic for accurately illustrating your vision and goals aligned to it. It is also a smart way to eliminate error, ambiguity or misunderstanding.

Inspire your team and colleagues. When people see your passion and understand exactly what you want to convey, they will believe you. They will then be far more likely to not just get behind your vision but be excited and motivated about it, too. To keep your communication genuine, always choose words that you would honestly say, and something that shows your authenticity.

Create positive energy in the workplace. Everyone needs a positive energy whenever possible. Pick words that fuel action, lift spirits and make people feel competent. Such “can do” words can seemingly work miracles. They can build trust, demonstrate honesty, clarify meanings, strengthen teams, express kindness and reflect empathy. Positive words and expressions will always move people more quickly towards where they need to go.

Safety measures at excavation sites

Excavation Safety is a standardized set of safety precautions for trenching and excavation to eliminate hazards and control risks in compliance with regulations. Protective systems such as sloping the ground, benching the ground, shoring the trench with supports such as planking or hydraulic jacks, and shielding the trench using a trench box should be properly implemented at all times. Other excavation safety measures include-

A. Structural ramps – whether for the exclusive use of employees or of equipment around excavations, structural ramps must be built according to the design of a competent person.

B. High-visibility vests – employees who are not only working around excavations but are also exposed to public traffic must wear high-visibility vests or clothing with similar reflective material.

C. Warning signs – mobile equipment operators who do not have easy visibility of the edge of excavations should be able to see warning signs such as barricades which will indicate proximity to excavations.

D. Testing – the condition of the atmosphere in and around excavations must be tested to ensure that it is safe even before employees are allowed to work at the site.

E. Emergency equipment – equipment such as stretchers, harness, etc. should be available in case of an emergency.

F. Regular inspections – Inspections conducted daily by designated competent persons can help reinforce excavation safety protection implemented for employees. Inspections conducted before shift starts can proactively catch and address safety issues.
