Tips for IELTS Listening

IELTS is divided into four components listening, reading, writing and speaking and every module is necessary to get desire band scores. In the exam listening is the first module which you will face it is divided into four parts and you get 40 questions and the time of the audio clip goes to approximately 30 minutes at the end you get the 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. To get high band score in this module you must be able to understand the British, American, Australian accents. Most of the time listening is in the British accent. Moreover, you have few seconds to read your questions before the recording starts. There is no negative marking in listening module and your section of listening will be more difficult as the test continue. Today in this article we will discuss some IELTS listening tips that will help you to get your desired band scores. 

You need to follow the below given tips:

1. Try to do practice of the full listening test daily because in exam your listening will be played just once and speakers don’t repeat any answer again. You should do at least two listening test in a day in order to make yourself habitual to concentrate on the test for long time.

2. You need to be a multitasking because in listening you are going to listen and write as well. You must be able to read the questions, listen for the answer and write down the words on the same moment.

3. Try to transfer your answers on notebook within 10 minutes because during exam you don’t get any extra time to transfer your answers. Also try to write answers on the listening answer sheet.

4. If you don’t understand the answer than don’t worry about that. Just do your own guess and write something interlinked as blanks. For example, you have a question about any date, month, or day. You can write any date any day with guess if you don’t heard the answer clearly as sometimes guess work can be right.

5. Try to follow the instructions of listening, before starting the test read the instructions carefully and try to analyze the answer in your mind. There are many keywords which you get in listening that help you to getting the idea of your answer.

6. Spellings are very essential. Do focus on spelling mistakes during your practice. If you don’t know the exact spelling you can know it from internet and write it at least 3 or 4 time on daily basis so that you can remember it.

7. You get 10 types of questions in this test.

• Fill in the blanks

• complete the sentences

Multiple choice MCQs

labeling the map

• labeling the diagram

• Table completion

• Summary completion

• Sentence completion

Always do practice of every type of questions. Most of the students face difficulty in the multiple choice questions.  So pay more attention on it.

8. Don’t use the pen to transfer your answers. You must use pencil to transfer your answers or to underline the questions. If you transfer the wrong answer than it is easy to erase also Pencil makes your writing more clear.

9. If you skip your answer than move on the next one. Don’t waste your time to think about the pervious question. If you do this, you lose your concentration and don’t able to eliminate other answers correctly.
