Transportation Vocabulary
Punt – a long, narrow boat with a flat bottom and square ends, moved by a person standing at one end and pushing on the bottom of a river with a pole.
Sentence – When legering from a punt you don’t want to be messing about with indicators that require two hands to set.
Gondola – a narrow boat with a raised point at both ends, used on canals in Venice.
Sentence – The beautifully illuminated Gondola, which was so greatly admired a year ago, will recommence nightly voyages.
Aircraft – any vehicle, with or without an engine, that can fly, such as a plane or helicopter.
Sentence – They were unwilling, or unable, to guarantee safe passage from the city to the aircraft.
Rowing Boat – a small boat that is moved by pulling oars (= poles with flat ends) through the water.
Sentence – It was a bit like the rowing boat trying to make headway against the flow of the river near the weir.
Helicopter – a type of aircraft without wings, that has one or two sets of large blades that go round very fast on top. It can land and take off vertically and can stay in one place in the air.
Sentence – A survivor was knocked unconscious when the helicopter ditched.
Seaplane – an aircraft that can take off from and land on water.
Sentence – The aerodrome was well established, with the headquarters on board the seaplane tender Ark Royal which was anchored in the bay.
Airship – a large aircraft without wings, used especially in the past, consisting of a large bag filled with gas that is lighter than air and driven by engines. Passengers were carried in a structure hanging below.

Hot-Air Balloon – an aircraft consisting of a very large bag filled with heated air or other gas, with a basket (= container) hanging under it in which people can ride.

Airport – a place where aircraft regularly take off and land, with buildings for passengers to wait in.

Platform – a flat raised area or structure.

Automobile – a car.
Sentence – According to the American Automobile Association, since 1964 all cars sold in the United States have been equipped with seat belts.
Crew – a group of people who work together, especially all those who work on and operate a ship, aircraft, etc.
Sentence – The tragedy could have been averted if the crew had followed safety procedures.
Passenger – a person who is travelling in a vehicle but is not driving it, flying it, or working on it.
Sentence – The ship went under just minutes after the last passenger had been rescued.
