What is IELTS Speaking Part 1?
IELTS speaking test is a face to face oral interview between the candidate and an examiner conducted for 12-15 minutes. Interview is divided in three parts in which the examiner asks you different type of questions from general to range of issues. The first part of the interview is an introduction. As in the beginning of the test students normally get nervous and the examiner tries to make them comfortable in the initial stage of the part. Now let’s discuss what is IELTS Speaking Part 1? What can be asked in this part of the test. First, let us see what are the three parts of the test is about-
PART 1- some general questions about yourself, your life and your interests
PART 2- a short talk on a particular topic
PART 3- a discussion of issues linked to the talk in part 2
What you can expect in Part 1?
In part one of the IELTS Speaking test the interviewer asks you basic questions about yourself and asks to see your identification. Further, the examiner asks you some questions about yourself, your family/hometown, your job or studies and a range of similar topics areas that are familiar to you. This section lasts for 4-5 minutes and you have to give long answers to display your command over language.
Be prepared to answer the questions in part 1 of the interview. It starts with an introduction in which the interviewer asks you basic questions about yourself and asks to see your identification. The interviewer will then go on to ask you further questions about yourself, your family/hometown, your job or studies and a range of similar topics areas that are familiar to you. This section of the test lasts 4-5 minutes and in it you may need to give longer answers to questions to ensure you display your best ability.
Types of question can be asked-
– Your country of origin
– Your hometown
– How long you have lived there
– What you do: work or study
– Your interests and future plans
He/she can also ask –
– Family and family relationships
– Modern and traditional lifestyles
– Traditional or modern buildings
– Tourism and tourist sites
– Celebrations and cultural activities
– Schooling and the education system
– City and country living
Now, let us see which ability is tested by the examiner in these questions-
– Ability to provide full answers to all questions
– Ability to give longer responses to some questions
– Ability to give information by describing and explaining
How the introduction section goes-
– First the interviewer greets the candidate and introduces himself or herself.
– The interviewer asks the candidate to state his or her name clearly for the cassette and confirms the candidate’s country of origin.
– The interviewer then asks to see the candidate’s identification (passport). The remainder of Part 1 of the test will follow this format:
– The interviewer will ask the candidate set questions about your hometown or your occupation.
– The interviewer will then ask set questions about a familiar topic of general interest.
– They could ask three to five questions which will extend or develop this topic.
– The interviewer may ask the candidate about more than one topic.
Tips for impressive conversation
1. Be Relax and communicate with confidence. Participation in the conversation is must if you do not participate fully in the conversation you may not achieve your potential band score. This can be because you are not been able to demonstrate the level of language you are capable of producing.
2. Avoid repetition of common words instead use synonyms.
3. Don’t deliver crammed answers and be natural.
4. Don’t hesitate, ask the examiner to repeat the question if you don’t understand any.
5. Also know the assessment criteria, it will help you to structure your answer.
