If we see section wise it means you get 20 minute to solve one section and 1.5 minute to solve one answer if you go beyond this limitation the chances of leaving the questions unanswered enhances. So you must have the tact of time management. The difficulty level of passages get harder as you move through the test so you should complete the first passage quickly to make that you have enough time to tackle the final passage. Keeping the problem of time in view we will discuss 5 things you must know to manage time in IELTS reading for 2021 exam.
1: Read the questions first
It is highly recommended to read the questions first as if you will read the text first your brain will have to work hard to know what the passage is about. If you read the questions before reading the passage you will feel more relaxed and can find answers with ease. Also remember don’t read each and every word of the passage just opt skimming and scanning technique. There are different question types in IELTS reading and you should know each of them so that you can attempt each of them without confusion.
2: Don’t go in a line
After reading the questions you can start reading the passage and should not devote more than 5 minutes in this work. You should not follow the line by reading introduction first than body paragraph and conclusion at the last. Instead first read introduction than conclusion and body paragraph at the end. It is because by reading first and last paragraph you will be knowing what’s the text is about and what is the result so this will make you easier to know what is in the body paragraph as this portion is lengthy and can take long time to finish.
3: Don’t read every sentence
In IELTS Reading you can drain out of time if you will start reading each and every word of the passage so it’s essential to use skimming. Another technique is to look for main ideas, which are usually near the beginning of each new paragraph. Once you’ve found this idea, you don’t need to read all of the supporting sentences. A quick glance at the final sentence can help you to confirm if that main idea was the correct one.
4: Underline keywords
This next tip is related to scanning, while scanning when you come across any keywords like the name of a person, place or organization, underline it. That’s because the chances of appearing these names are certain in question and at that movement you will find difficult to search them again and ample of time can be wasted in this process. If it will be underlined it will be easier to locate the information again.
5: Spend no more than one minute per question
This final IELTS Reading tip to save your time is don’t stick to one question, if you want to score 7 or above at least 30 questions should be correct and if you adhered to one difficult question and spend 4 to 5 minutes on it that means you sacrificed 4 to 5 answers. So, it’s recommended if you don’t find answer for any question just move on and keep that question for last. If you get time at the end of the exam than go for it and if unfortunately you don’t get any time left just use guess work as there is no negative marking and you will not lose any score for wrong answer. Keep in mind that no question should be left unanswered.
All the above said tips cannot be adopted in one day or two it needs lots of practice and to implement it you should know how to practice?
