Difference between Academic and General Writing
Writing is the major mode of conveying messages to one another and there are certain styles like literary writing, technical writing, creative writing, academic writing, general writing etc. which are opted according to the purpose of writing. Today in this article we will discuss about what is academic and general writing. You will also know some amazing difference between Academic and General Writing.
1. What is Academic Writing?
Academic writing is a writing style which is used to write academic research projects, term papers, conference papers, essays, abstracts, reports, etc. It has its own set of rules and is objective, concise and impersonal which makes it more structural.
2. What is General Writing?
General writing is a writing style which we use to write in our daily routine. It is used to write upon some general subjects and general papers which are published for amusement of the readers. General writing can be informal, formal or semi-formal, and is easier to understand than academic writing.
Now let’s discuss about the major difference between Academic Writing and general Writing

So this is the basic difference between General and Academic writing structure. In IELTS we cannot go with all of the above said differences and writing in IELTS is bit different.
Academic Writing in IELTS
In Academic IELTS there are two tasks in writing test task 1 is graph, chart, table etc. where one have to write a report of 150 words in 20 minutes. Task 2 is an essay with the word limit of at least 250 and 40 minutes are given to complete this task. Talking about the format, both the tasks should be in academic format and formal. In this test informal or semi formal language is not at allowed in case you use it your scores will be deducted. Remember grammar, sentence structure, spellings, punctuation should be accurate. Abbreviations, slangs and fillers are strictly prohibited in this test.
General Writing in IELTS
As in academic test the task 2 in general test is also an essay which should be completed in 40 minutes with at least 250 words. The task 1 in general is different as you have to write a letter it can be formal, informal or semi formal. So, one have to select the writing format accordingly as wrong selection can cause problem. Talking about the format, the task 2 should be in academic format and formal. In this test informal or semi formal language is not at allowed in case you use it your scores will be deducted. Remember grammar, sentence structure, spellings, punctuation should be accurate. Abbreviations, slangs and fillers are strictly prohibited in this test.
